We’re Hiring Entry-level Firefighters
North Kitsap Fire and Rescue (NKFR) is hiring to fill three entry-level firefighter/EMT positions and is accepting application packets.
Candidates apply for the position via the National Testing Network (NTN) https://candidates.nationaltestingnetwork.com/ and complete the FireTEAM exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA), Parts 1 and 2. In addition, candidates must submit a North Kitsap Fire & Rescue Application for Employment, available on our website (www.nkfr.org), a resume, and proof of successful completion of the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT).

To be considered for the position, all items must be completed by 4 p.m. on March 13, 2026. Following the submission deadline, NTN scores and application materials will be reviewed, and candidates who meet the requirements will be contacted by email with an invitation to participate in an interview process.
Entry-Level Firefighter/EMT Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire date
- Insurable as a driver in Washington State
- Possess the right to work in the United States
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language
Once a conditional offer of employment is made, successful completion of the following is also required:
- LEOFF 2 Medical Exam
- Psychological Evaluation
- Background Check
- Abstract of Driving Record
- EMT Academy (Scheduled for July 6 – August 28)
- Fire Academy (Scheduled for August 31 – December 11)
Salary Information: The salary for a top-step 2026 firefighter/EMT is $9,447.73/month. Entry-level firefighters/EMTs start at $5,668.64/month.
Benefits Information: Generous Cafeteria Plan benefit package with a monthly benefit allocation starting at $1,354.57 that increases annually, LEOFF 2 retirement, 288 hours of annual sick leave, 216-486 hours of vacation leave depending on years of service, educational incentive. Firefighters/EMTs work a 48/96 schedule and are represented by I.A.F.F. Local #2819.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue (NKF&R) is a fire protection district serving the communities of Hansville, Kingston, Indianola, Miller Bay, Suquamish, and Port Gamble S’Klallam on the northeastern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula. We provide all-hazards emergency response and community risk reduction services.
We responded to 3,696 calls in 2025 (10.2 calls per day), of which approximately 67% were emergency medical responses. Our services include public education and response to fire, medical, hazardous materials, tech rescue, and wildland fires. We are proud to serve in the protection of lives and property for the citizens of our fire district.
