The Spokane Valley Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Hazardous-Materials Inspector/Investigator, a critical role within our Prevention Division responsible for hazardous-materials enforcement, complex fire inspections, spill prevention oversight, and origin-and-cause fire investigations. This position plays a vital part in protecting our community by ensuring compliance with fire codes, responding to hazardous-materials incidents, and working closely with business owners, contractors, industrial sites, regional partners, and the public. The Haz-Mat Inspector/Investigator conducts comprehensive inspections, reviews plans, prepares reports, and performs investigative duties with a high level of independence and professional judgment.

Salary & Benefits
- Salary: $11,575.07 per month (138,900.84 yearly)
- Longevity Pay: After 5–25 years of service
- Vacation: 120 hours/year
- Sick Leave: 12 hours/month
- Holidays: 116 hours/year (pro-rated)
- Medical Insurance: Employee premium paid 100% by SVFD
- Employee +1: $42.97/month
- Employee +2+: $85.96/month
- Dental Insurance: Department contribution up to $130/month
- Retirement: LEOFF
- Deferred Compensation: Department match up to a max of 5% of TFF base monthly
- Probation: One year
Minimum Qualifications
Requirements differ for internal vs. external applicants.
All applicants must hold an IFSAC or equivalent Haz-Mat Technician certification, possess a valid state driver’s license, be eligible for U.S. employment, be at least 18 years old, and be a non-tobacco user.
Internal Applicants:
- Two (2) years as a full-time SVFD Inspector with designation of Assistant Fire Marshal preceding the closing date of application
External Applicants:
- Current ICC Fire Inspector I & II Certifications
- Current IAAI Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) Certification
- Two (2) years full-time paid Firefighter experience
- Four (4) years as Assistant or Deputy Fire Marshal with Haz-Mat experience
(Additional certification and training requirements apply upon appointment to the position.)
