Wildland Mitigation Supervisor

The Spokane Valley Fire Department is now accepting applications for the position of Wildland Mitigation Supervisor, a leadership role responsible for managing and coordinating wildfire mitigation, fuels reduction, and community resilience programs under the Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG). This position provides strategic oversight of wildfire prevention efforts, supervises Wildland Mitigation Specialists and contractors, partners closely with DNR, Conservation Districts, and regional agencies, and leads community outreach, CWPP updates, wildfire risk mapping, and Firewise/Wildfire Ready Neighbors engagement.
The Wildland Mitigation Supervisor will oversee program operations, budget management, performance reporting, contractor work, and interagency collaboration to enhance wildfire preparedness throughout Spokane Valley. This is a key operational leadership role that requires strong wildfire mitigation knowledge, experience directing field personnel, and the ability to manage multiple projects and grant deliverables independently.
Salary & Benefits
- $10,833.33/month ($130,000 annually)
- Vacation: 12 hrs/month
- Sick Leave: 10 hrs/month
- Holidays: 116 hrs/year (pro-rated)
- Medical Premium: Employee covered 100% by SVFD
- Employee +1: $42.97/month; Employee +2+: $85.96/month
- Dental: Up to $130/month paid by SVFD
- Retirement: Washington State Department of Retirement Systems
- Deferred Compensation: Department match up to 5% of TFF base wage
- One-year probation
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Forestry, Natural Resources, or Public Administration
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Age 18 or older; U.S. employment eligibility
- Valid driver’s license
- Non-tobacco user
Required Occupational Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years progressively responsible experience in wildfire prevention, fuels management, or related discipline, including 2 years supervisory or project management experience
- Ability to manage grant-funded programs, deliverables, and multi-project coordination
- Knowledge of wildfire behavior, fuels treatment practices, Firewise, CWPP, and community preparedness frameworks
Desired Qualifications
- NWCG Fire Prevention Education Team Leader or higher
- NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist
- Experience leading interagency wildfire resilience efforts
