About the Role
As a Volunteer Meteorology Specialist, you will assist in interpreting weather data, supporting hazard analysis, and improving our collective understanding of National Weather Service (NWS) products. You’ll collaborate with our Team to strengthen Watch Duty’s ability to cover & understand hazards.
This role is ideal for individuals with a strong interest in atmospheric science, disaster response, or applied meteorology who want to utilize their skills to protect communities.
Responsibilities
- Interpret and share insights from NWS products, weather models, and radar data.
- Provide input during wildfire, flood, and severe weather events to help Watch Duty alert communities & learn effectively.
- Collaborate with the Watch Duty team to build systems and processes to contextualize meteorological data for broad public understanding through report dissemination.
- Contribute to ongoing research and best practices as Watch Duty explores hazard coverage.
Requirements
- Strong interest or background in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field.
- Familiarity with National Weather Service platforms, products, and terminology.
- Familiarity with Pivotal Weather.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex weather information to a general audience.
- Team-oriented mindset and commitment to accuracy under time pressure.
- Ability to contribute year-round, with flexibility to engage when your schedule allows.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Preferred (but not required)
- Degree, coursework, or field experience in meteorology, climatology, atmospheric, or environmental science.
- Experience analyzing or presenting weather data (academic, professional, or volunteer).
- Prior experience in emergency management, fire science, or community disaster response.
