The Opportunity

WSDOT Accounting and Financial Services Division is currently seeking a Fiscal Technician 2 to join the Payments & Receipts Unit in Lacey, WA. In this role, you will provide essential fiscal and administrative support that helps ensure vendor payments and cash receipts are processed accurately, timely, and in compliance with applicable policies and procedures. You will work with financial transactions, warrants, remittances, records, and customer inquiries while using established accounting systems and processes. Your work will directly support the accurate processing of public funds and the delivery of WSDOT transportation projects.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Sort incoming mail, accurately log checks and payments, verify and balance daily check totals, and support scanning and electronic recordkeeping.
  • Research and log returned warrants, match remittances to incoming warrants, process single-flag transactions, and identify, research, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Ensure financial documents are handled in compliance with agency policies, internal controls, and applicable records retention requirements.
  • Prepare and process daily cash receipt transactions, and other financial documents, ensuring timely and accurate recording in the financial system.
  • Verify, balance, and reconcile receipt information to supporting documentation and research and resolve discrepancies.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and communicate recurring issues, trends, and discrepancies to supervisory staff.
  • Develop, update, and maintain desk procedures, reference materials, workflow documentation, and training materials to support continuity and consistency.
  • Provide timely and professional customer service by responding to inquiries and providing information and assistance regarding payments, warrants, and related financial transactions.
  • Research and resolve customer inquiries, communicate with agency staff, vendors, and customers, and maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Process petty cash requests, prepare checks for signature, maintain the petty cash check register, coordinate approvals, and communicate with customers regarding check availability.
  • Cross-train with Fiscal Analyst 1 and Office Assistant 2 staff to provide operational support and workload coverage.

  • Data Entry & Information Systems: Accurately enter, retrieve, and update information using a mainframe or comparable database system.
  • Independence & Initiative: Work with minimal supervision, take responsibility for completing tasks, and proactively identify opportunities to improve processes.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

The following qualifications are also required:

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work, and required work on-site in Lacey, Monday through Friday.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
