The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two Transportation Technician 3 positions to support the Olympic Region’s Tumwater Design Office in the successful development and delivery of highway design projects. This position plays an important role in preparing design documentation, plans, specifications, and cost estimates that help ensure transportation projects are delivered in accordance with established standards. By supporting high-quality project design and providing technical guidance to design staff, this role contributes to the safety, reliability, and long-term resilience of Washington’s transportation system. The successful candidate will help advance WSDOT’s commitment to quality, safety, stewardship, and public service while contributing to a workplace built on respect, equal opportunity, and belonging.

What to Expect

These positions may occasionally perform field visits at outdoor project sites for observation, information gathering and occasional light physical activities. Exposure to hazards include traffic, noise, construction, weather, flora/fauna and uneven terrain.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician will:

  • Provide computer-aided drafting and design support for Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&Es) in accordance with WSDOT standards.
  • Develop and revise plan sheets, exhibits, alignments, profiles, cross sections, engineering graphics, and quantity calculations.
  • Prepare roadway, drainage, utility, signing, pavement marking, traffic control, right of way, and geometric design elements.
  • Prepare and maintain design documentation, specifications, reports, exhibits, and cost estimates.
  • Review drafting, calculations, and project records for accuracy, completeness, quality control, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain electronic project files, design documentation, and version control.
  • Perform quantity calculations and prepare quantity tabulations, structure notes, and contract estimates using engineering software.
  • Conduct field reviews to verify existing conditions, gather design data, support quality control, and ensure compliance with safety requirements.

Qualifications

To be considered for these opportunities, the following competencies are required:

  • Technical Interpretation, Analysis, & Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering plans, specifications, contract documents, manuals, and technical data; identify issues or discrepancies; and apply sound engineering judgment to support effective, practical solutions.
  • Engineering Technology & Software: Demonstrated ability to use, or learn to use, engineering-related software and digital tools to support design, analysis, documentation, inspection, data collection, and project delivery (e.g., CAD, databases, spreadsheets, and agency systems). Note: Foundational knowledge may be supported by formal classroom training
  • Engineering Documentation & Records Management: Demonstrated ability to accurately document engineering, inspection, survey, materials, or project support activities through reports, field notes, calculations, quantities, records, and other required documentation in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  • Growth Mindset & Service-Oriented: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Communication Skills: Skills to communicate information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, both virtually and in-person, using a variety of electronic media, including, but not limited to telephones, email, text, video conferencing, and computer conferencing.
  • Teamwork Skills: Experience in being able to effectively work both individually and within a diverse team environment.
  • Work Prioritization: Experience in working independently and prioritize workload and handle multiple assignments.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
