The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a detail-oriented Transportation Engineer 2 to join our team in Seattle as the Quality Verification Engineer. In this critical role, you'll help ensure the quality, safety, and long-term performance of Washington's transportation infrastructure by verifying that construction materials, testing, sampling, and documentation meet contract requirements and WSDOT standards. Working closely with contractors, project teams, and key stakeholders, you'll perform quality verification audits, coordinate with adjacent projects, and play an essential role in delivering successful transportation projects that serve communities across the state.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Quality Verification Engineer will:
- Perform QV inspection of construction activities, auditing compliance with contract plans, specifications, permits and commitments.
- Check that permanent contract materials are only being placed that are approved.
- Audit to check that materials are being sampled and tested according to contract requirements.
- Review project process and prepare field notes and other pay notes so that payment can be made in a timely manner for completed contract work
- Assist the QV Lead Engineer with providing on the job training
- develop site and work specific pre-activity safety plans in advance of inspection activities and review on regular basis on work progresses.
- Prepare field reports and take and file project photographs documenting construction work and issues.
- Write Inspection Daily Reports (IDRs) to document the field work being performed.
- Prepare project record and photographically document work activities and contract issues.
- QV material sampling and testing.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Field Operations & Equipment Handling: Experience performing a wide range of field operations independently, applying technical judgment to ensure efficient, safe, and correct use of equipment and materials.
- Communication & Coordination: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing, including experience with planning, scheduling, delivering presentations, facilitating training, and implementing decisions.
- Standards and Procedures: Experience researching, interpreting, and applying engineering standards, policies, manuals, specifications, and procedures related to transportation engineering projects. Skill in identifying deviations from requirements and elevating issues through appropriate channels.
- Physical Capability: Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Licensure: A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
- Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
- Leadership & Staff Development: Experience training and developing staff, including assigning and planning work based on project priorities, verifying the work of others to ensure quality, accuracy, and adherence to standards.
- WSDOT Construction Expertise: Knowledge of and experience with construction administration procedures for WSDOT projects.
- WSDOT Technical Application: Knowledge of WSDOT Construction Manual, Design Manual, and utility requirements and standards.
- Contract Documentation: Experience reading and understanding contract documents such as special provisions, contract plans, and standard specifications.
- Systems Proficiency: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite procedures including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

- The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
