WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Technician 3 to support the successful delivery of transportation projects that improve mobility and enhance safety for the traveling public. In this role, you will provide essential technical support throughout the design, construction, and project delivery process while helping ensure work is completed safely and efficiently. This position plays a key role in advancing WSDOT's mission by contributing to high-quality infrastructure and promoting a strong culture of safety through active participation in project safety planning and work-site reviews. Among the varied responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician will:- Serve as the qualified tester for inspecting materials.
- Interpret highway construction plans, specifications, and special provisions in monitoring the contractor’s work.
- Measure and calculate quantities and prepare notes to support payment for activities inspected.
- Work as an asphalt inspector on paving projects.
- Work as a concrete tester and inspector on structures projects
- Complete the inspector’s daily reports.
- Assist the Office Engineer with construction documentation.
- Check calculations including elevations, grades, and earthwork.
- Assist in the development of electronic drawings for design and construction using computer-aided drafting.
- Work on a construction or design project survey team.
- Assist with the operation, adjustment, and maintenance of all types of survey equipment.
- Visibly demonstrate your commitment to the Department’s safety program and Eastern Region Core Values.
- Communicate both orally and in writing and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:- Applied Technical Engineering Skills: Ability to perform basic technical engineering tasks under guidance, such as data collection, field inspections, or plan review.
- Engineering Fundamentals Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of engineering principles through formal education or equivalent experience in one or more of the following areas: civil, structural, geotechnical, traffic, or transportation engineering; soil mechanics; or other closely related disciplines.
- Communication and Collaboration: Effective written and verbal communication skills to interact with contractors, engineering staff, and the public. Able to communicate observations, findings, and technical data clearly in documentation and discussions.
- Safe and Legal Vehicle Operation: Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Commitment to Equity and Respectful Workplace Culture: Demonstrated experience working in a manner that contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and equitable workplace. Preferred Qualifications
- WSDOT General Inspector Certification: Obtain certification as a WSDOT General Inspector within 12 months of employment.
- WAQTC Qualified Tester Certification: Hold or obtain a Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) Qualified Tester certification (or equivalent) within 24 months of hire.
- ACI Qualified Tester Certification: Hold or obtain an American Concrete Institute (ACI) Qualified Tester certification (or equivalent) within 24 months of hire.
