Overview
The Extension Program Coordinator I will manage the Ogden Botanical Gardens (OBG). The OBG is located at 1750 Monroe Boulevard in Ogden, Utah. It is a public garden maintained through Utah State University. The manager oversees the maintenance, irrigation, and development of the gardens, plus the part time/seasonal employees. They also collaborate with the local Extension Agent to offer educational programs, train and direct volunteers, and collaborate with Ogden City Parks. The gardens are open year-round.
Responsibilities
- Designs, coordinates, and implements the aspects of the Ogden Botanical Garden (OBG) in a professional manner.
- Work directly with the public as a representative of USU.
- Develop, monitor, maintain, and administer program revenues and expenses; may develop or participate in the development of funding proposals for the program.
- Hire and direct season employees.
- Help train and direct Master Gardener volunteers and docents.
- Collaborate with Ogden City Parks in maintaining the property.
- Facilitate garden design, maintenance, installation and expansion.
- Partner with the Utah State University Botanical Center in Kaysville.
- Be a part of the team that manages the USU two botanical properties (Ogden and Kaysville).
- Answer phones timely, assist walk-ins, and professional help visitors enjoy their experience at the Ogden Botanical Gardens.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree plus two years of related work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a related field (horticulture, plant science, nursery management, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.
- Excellent public and people skills.
- Good Communication skills.
- Experience managing people.
- Experience managing a budget.
- Knowledge of irrigation and its components.
- Valid driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 years experience in public gardens, green industry, or related field.
- Organized and able to use time wisely.
- Experience working with donors.
- Pesticide applicators license.
- Mechanical skills.
- Experience managing volunteers and docents.

During the growing season (Mar. – Nov.) the majority of the work is outdoors maintaining the gardens, managing employees, docents, volunteers, and working with visitors. This includes operating mowers, sprayers, lawn care equipment, pruners, chain saw (occasionally), etc. Some physical labor is required.
During the off season (Nov. – Feb.) the majority of the work is accomplished indoors and includes planning, repairing and servicing equipment, and can be conducted between the OBG, Kaysville, and home.

Visitors can find answers and glean ideas to inspire and enhance their own quality of life through improved plant selection, cultural practices, and environmentally sound methods. Classes and events through the year offer opportunities to connect with other gardeners (whether novices or those with hard-earned green thumbs) to learn and share ideas.
