Overview
Finishes Technicians - Flooring install, maintain, and repair a diverse array of floor coverings to maintain, repair, and finish USU Facilities, as well as assist with painting preparation and application as needed. They work as a member of a team under limited supervision on various projects or assignments. This position will be hired at either an Apprentice or Journeyman level based upon qualifications/experience and duties assigned. Please see Qualifications section below.
Responsibilities
- Prepares surfaces for floor coverings installation. Removes current floor covering, including sweeping, scraping, sanding, or chipping of dirt and irregularities from base surfaces.
- Fills cracks and patches on uneven surfaces to form a smooth, clean foundation.
- Assists senior technicians by carrying, moving, and positioning materials, equipment, and tools.
- Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Assists in work in other areas of the shop, such as painting, upholstery, and signage.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
For Apprentice:
- Aptitude is required. Aptitude is defined as passing the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), with a score of 70% or higher.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of building trades.
For Journeyman:
- Four years of directly related work experience. Incumbents must possess journeyman skills and/or a license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
- Knowledge of different types of floor coverings and installation and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.
- Ability to select and apply paint.
- Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
- Ability to take direction from supervisors.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
