Overview

Under the direction of the Resource Recovery Manager, this position Operates garbage truck, semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, roll off trucks, car hauler, and forklift for the waste and recycling operations on campus. Operates and maintains equipment and vehicles used in waste and recycling operations on campus. Supports surplus sales, recycling and Lab gas operations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a garbage truck and roll off truck to remove waste from designated sites on campus.
  • Performs safety checks and minor repairs on the garbage trucks.
  • Creates route schedule for waste removal.
  • Operates a forklift for waste and recycling operations.
  • Removes snow on campus using a truck and attached scraper.
  • Maintains propane supply for all resource recovery equipment.
  • Delivers recycled products to vendors.
  • Maintains daily records of completed work.
  • Provides guidance, instruction, and direction to part-time students.
  • Keep waste trucks washed and clean.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Five years of directly related work experience in utility maintenance/equipment operation is required.
  • Must possess a current driver’s license, a valid State of Utah Class A Commercial Driver’s License or class B CDL.
  • Must obtain certification as a Forklift Operator within six (6) months of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of recycling and knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials that are to be recycled and quality standards for raw materials.
  • Knowledge of the practices of operation of specialized equipment used for recycling.
  • Knowledge of safety, loading, and maintenance procedures
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures
  • Skill in basic reading, writing, and math
  • Skill in heavy equipment operation
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating the work and training of others.
  • Ability to operate light equipment.
  • Ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with co-workers, campus customers, and the public.
  • Ability to prioritize work and accomplish tasks.

Work may include sitting, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting weights of approximately 60 lbs. or less unassisted and weights over 60 lbs. with assistance. Work exposes incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Work exposes incumbent to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery. Work may include both indoor and outdoor activity where employee is exposed to elements of nature: cold, hot, rain, snow, sleet, ice, etc. Employee must be able to maneuver in tight places, climb ladders, step over obstacles, step on and off machinery, etc. Work will include operation of a motor vehicle. Communicate via cell phone.

Safety equipment in the form of masks, goggles, gloves, and ear protection may be required.
