The Center for Population Health Research (CPHR) at the University of Montana invites applications for a Research Scientist to join the Data and Modeling Core (DM Core).
The DM Core provides essential computational and statistical support for externally funded research projects across the university, with a focus on improving health outcomes through advanced analytics. This position is ideal for a scientist with deep expertise in statistical modeling and epidemiology who thrives in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
The Research Scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing sophisticated statistical models to address complex questions in population health and ecology. This role requires a high degree of independence, advanced programming skills, and the ability to translate complex data into peer-reviewed publications and actionable health insights.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

- Integrate empirical data, statistical algorithms, and predictive models to assess organismal or population-level responses to environmental and social determinants.
- Manage and analyze large, complex datasets (e.g., environmental data, electronic health records, or longitudinal surveys).
- Utilize UM’s Griz/Hellgate and CPHR DM Core clusters to process and analyze "big data" using optimized code.
- Serve as co-authors on peer-reviewed manuscripts; present findings at national and international conferences.
- Assist in research proposals and grant applications by designing study protocols and analytic plans.
- Work closely with interconnected teams across UM to provide modeling expertise.
- Work effectively in a team environment, communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders, and bring a positive, professional attitude to collaborative work.
Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computational ecology, data science, or a closely related field.
- Expert-level skills in R (or similar), Python, or C++.
- Proven experience in spatial statistics, machine learning, or Bayesian inference.
- Familiarity with Linux-based cluster environments and cloud computing.
- Excellent technical writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate-level training in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computational ecology, data science, or closely related field.
- Experience with GIS and the analysis of remotely sensed data (e.g., Google Earth Engine).
- Familiarity with public health data repositories.
- Experience mentoring graduate research assistants and training junior personnel in analytic workflows.

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program. Options for remote or hybrid work may be considered.
