The Student Wellness and Recreation Coordinator is a key leader in promoting holistic well-being, health education, and engagement across the Montana Western community. While students remain the primary population served, this role is designed to positively impact students, employees, and community members through inclusive wellness, recreation, and health promotion initiatives. This position oversees the day-to-day operations of the Student Wellness Center, develops inclusive and holistic wellness programming; manages recreation and fitness opportunities, and supports a campus culture centered on health, balance, and overall well-being. Working collaboratively across campus departments and with community partners, the coordinator fosters an environment that strengthens connection, promotes healthy lifestyles, and supports success for all who engage with the Student Wellness Center and its programs.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Student Wellness Center Oversight

  • Manage daily operations of the Student Wellness Center, including oversight of policies and procedures, to ensure it remains a welcoming and safe space for all users.
  • Oversee staff scheduling, facility management, and the delivery of wellness and recreation services.
  • Maintain wellness equipment and supplies in coordination with campus and community partners.

Recreational and Fitness Programming

  • Develop and implement a variety of recreational and fitness opportunities, including intramurals, group fitness, outdoor experiences, and health-related events.
  • Encourage broad participation by creating accessible, engaging, and inclusive programs.
  • Coordinate recreation equipment checkout and check-in processes.

Wellness Education and Outreach

  • Lead health promotion and wellness education efforts through targeted campaigns and campus-wide initiatives.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners to deliver programs focused on mental health, stress management, sexual health, and overall well-being.
  • Support a culture of prevention, education, and shared responsibility for wellness across campus.

Supervision of Student Staff

  • Recruit, train, and supervise student employees.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for student staff.
  • Foster a positive, accountable, and service-oriented team culture.

PATH Program Support

  • Provide leadership and mentorship for PATH (Peers Advocating Toward Health), a peer education program.
  • Support the planning and execution of wellness initiatives and outreach events that contribute to campus-wide health education efforts.

Orientation and Transition Support

  • Contribute to new student orientation and transition programming, with a focus on wellness, belonging, and engagement.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs and campus partners to ensure wellness is integrated into onboarding and transitional experiences.

Grant Implementation and Compliance

  • Support the implementation of wellness-related grants, including the Rape Prevention Education (RPE) grant.
  • Assist with educational programming, awareness campaigns, and grant reporting requirements that benefit the broader campus community.

Collaboration and Leadership

  • Partner with ASUMW (student government), student organizations, and campus departments, and community partners to co-sponsor wellness events and recreational opportunities.
  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts related to campus health, wellness engagement, and retention.
  • Serve as a collaborative campus resource for wellness-related initiatives impacting students, employees, and community members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in wellness and recreational program development.
  • Strong understanding of health promotion, wellness best practices, and inclusive program design.
  • Experience coordinating health-focused services and managing a wellness or recreation facility.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive, community-centered approaches to health and wellness.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in student wellness, recreation, or the broader health and wellness field.
  • Supervisor Experience.
  • Background in managing wellness or fitness centers and organizing wellness education initiatives.
  • Professional certifications in health and wellness (e.g., CPT, ACSM, ACE, NASM, NBC-HWC) demonstrating a commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth.
  • Familiarity with recreational equipment management and student outreach strategies.

Montana Western is the only public four-year college in the nation offering Experience One (X1), experiential learning delivered on the block schedule. Class sizes are small and students take a single course at a time, three hours each day for 18 days, before moving on to the next course.
