The Research Assistant in this position will work with biologists at state and federal agencies, tribes, universities, and/or non-governmental groups across the United States on projects that use environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess the presence and distribution of aquatic species. The person in this position will be responsible for processing eDNA samples for projects related to fish and/or wildlife conservation. The individual in this position will process data, extract DNA from samples, build sampling kits, analyze for target DNA, and summarize results. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for completing QAQC protocols to ensure the quality of the data in order to disseminate the results via tables, reports, or databases for publication. They will also be expected to keep up to date on peer reviewed publication related to eDNA assays so as to better inform techniques and interpretation of results.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation: Complete laboratory preparations and analyses
  • Analysis: Independently extract eDNA from filters and perform quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis
  • QAQC: Independently QAQC eDNA datasets and analyses of data
  • Troubleshoot: examine and evaluate eDNA procedures, protocols, and equipment to address unusual results and amend experiments as needed
  • Autoclaving: Sterilizing laboratory equipment and supplies to maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Dish Washing: Washing and sterilizing glassware, utensils, and other lab tools to ensure accurate and contamination-free experiments
  • General Maintenance and Cleaning: Keeping the laboratory space tidy and organized, including disposal of waste materials
  • Sample Inventory: Assisting in maintaining a well-organized sample inventory system to ensure efficient tracking and retrieval
  • Database Entry: Accurately entering data into laboratory databases to help organize and manage research information
  • Report Writing: Assist PI in preparing data for reports and publications
  • Grant Writing: May include participation in grant writing
  • Additional Tasks: Providing support for various laboratory tasks as required by lab personnel

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in laboratory settings
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Effective communication skills
  • Computer skills for field-based data collection and desktops
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete eDNA extractions, qPCR analysis, and other necessary lab processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with low quality and sensitive genetic samples (eDNA, non-invasive, etc.)
  • Understanding of laboratory preparation and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow protocols and maintain a clean and sterile working environment
  • Ability work with large datasets
  • Knowledge of basic statistics in Excel and R
  • Overall attention to detail and high level of organizational skills are required
  • Experience training others on new lab procedures
Preferred
  • Education in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology or related natural resource fields, coursework involving molecular biology and/or genetics
  • 1+ year experience working in laboratory setting
  • experience working with genetic data
  • 6+ months experience working with environmental DNA samples, particularly with sensitive extraction methods
  • 6+ months experience independently performing qPCR analysis
  • 6+ months experience QAQC’ing data from qPCR analysis

Compensation Title: Research Assistant III

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
