Position Responsibilities
Position Summary
The Urban Farm Technician will work with supervisors on implementation and management of an urban farm site serving veteran audiences in Boise, Idaho in collaboration with other land use partners. The Technician will coordinate and perform the installation of University of Idaho Extension teaching and demonstration areas, will maintain these areas and assist in supporting program participants and volunteers engaged in learning opportunities on site.
Responsibilities
Job Duty Function Prepare and Manage Cropping and Conservation Plots by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Identifying appropriate practices for soil management through evaluation, and maintaining soil health through conservation practices, amendments and crop rotations.
  • Suggesting, installing and maintaining appropriate irrigation technology for horticultural crops, including orchard.
  • Preparing planting beds for fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs.
  • Using tools and equipment for soil preparation, planting, weeding and maintenance of horticultural crops.
  • Supporting healthy and productive growth of horticultural crops.
  • Utilizing integrated pest management to identify, control and treat insects, weeds and disease in fruit and vegetable crops.
  • Practicing food safety principles when managing, harvesting, transporting and storing edible food crops.
  • Installing and maintaining season extension structures.
  • Provide care and maintenance for beehives and pastured poultry projects, if necessary.

Job Duty Function Support Program Participants and Program Partners by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Coordinating with other land use partners on overall site management and decision making.
  • Providing assistance and support to students and participants engaged in the urban farm teaching program.
  • Leading program participants in occasional farm tasks when required.
  • Training and delegating appropriate farm tasks to summer interns working on the farm site.
  • Assisting with harvest and preparation of produce for donation, deliveries, processing or marketing on site.
  • Assisting with training and participant engagement related to honey production and pastured poultry projects if necessary.
  • Observing and reporting issues to land use partners and supervisors.

Job Duty Function Provide Maintenanc, Recordkeeping and Inventory Management by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Creating and maintaining an inventory of all tools, equipment and structures owned by University of Idaho Extension at the farm site.
  • Providing care and maintenance for all tools, equipment and structure.
  • Keeping and maintaining records related to crop rotations, planting and harvest dates, crop yield, pest management, soil amendments, cover crops and soil testing.
  • Providing detailed requests for needed materials and supplies within an approved budget.
  • Evaluating all tools, equipment and structures regularly for theft, vandalism, damage or replacement.
  • Maintaining all manuals and instruction materials related to tools, equipment and structures used on the farm site.

Position Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in Horticulture, Agriculture Technology, Plant Science or closely related field.
  • Experience planting, managing and harvesting horticultural crops in greenhouse and/or field environments.
  • Experience with horticultural tools and equipment, including, but not limited to tillers, mowers, irrigation technology, greenhouses, high tunnels, seeders, weeders and sprayers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in research or commercial horticultural crop production, including orchards, market gardens, or nurseries.
  • Experience working with military veterans.
  • Experience supervising students, employees or volunteers.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and/or otherwise move at least 50 pounds.
  • Must provide own transportation to and from work site.
