The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Parma Research and Extension Center is seeking applicants for a Farm Operations Supervisor role. This role provides leadership, supervision, and direction for farm staff. Allocating land, equipment and facilities requested by researchers and other land users. Supervising and participating in land preparation. Supervises all field operations. Manages the production and research needs of crops. Upgrades farm equipment as needed for research purposes. Manages shop work and repairs. Oversees motor pool upkeep, repair and replacement. Supervises field activities for crops grown at the Parma farm.
Position Overview
The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is seeking an Operations Manager to provide leadership, supervision and direction for staff at the Parma Branch Station.

Duties may include:
  • Allocateland, equipment and facilities requested by researchers and other land users
  • Supervise and participating in land preparation, planting, harvesting and maintaining research plots
  • Supervise all field operations including plowing, bedding, planting, cultivation, irrigation, spraying, weeding and fertilizer applications
  • Manage the production and research needs of crops including potatoes, sugar beets, onions, corn, wheat, mint, barley, alfalfa seed, hops and beans
  • Upgrade farm equipment as needed for research purposes
  • Manage shop work and repairs
  • Oversee motor pool upkeep, repair and replacement
  • Hire and supervise seasonal help for farm and research projects
  • Supervise field activities for crops grown at the Parma farm

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Experience with modern farming practices, experience and knowledge of appropriate pest and weed management practices
  • Ability to operate personal computer and use word processing and farm management software
  • Experience in managing personal, facilities and budgets in an agriculture operation
  • Experience in generating and maintaining detailed farm and research records
  • Experience with written and verbal skills in communications with employees, supervisors and the general public
  • Experience cooperating and interacting with a variety of personalities and demonstrating flexibility and adaptability when dealing with difficult situations and motivating people
  • Experience with research fields plot techniques, field crop production, tree fruit production, grape production, both furrow and sprinkler irrigation and chemigation techniques
  • Knowledge of farm and industrial safety concerns
  • Experience repairing and maintaining a wide variety of farm tractors, equipment and motor pool vehicles
  • Experience research objectives to the general public



Required Education
  • Bachelors Degree in Agriculture or a related field; four additional years of experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree


Required Other
  • This position requires the employee to possess or obtain (within 3 months):
    • Pesticide professional applicator license valid in the state of Idaho
    • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, under the Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, is subject to the following drug and alcohol testing: pre-employment (post-offer/pre-duty), post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up
  • Ability to maintain pesticide application license to remain compliant with ISDA credits
  • Willingness to work odd and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays
Additional Preferred
  • Experience with research fields plot techniques, field crop production, tree fruit production, grape production, both furrow and sprinkler irrigation and chemigation techniques
  • Knowledge of farm and industrial safety concerns
  • Effectively communicate research objectives to the general public


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift and/or otherwise move up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to climb and work on a ladder
  • Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions
