Duties
At 3.4 million acres, Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states. It is also the lowest, hottest, and driest national park in the United States. Furnace Creek Headquarters (primary visitor center and work offices) is an hour and fifteen minutes from the nearest grocery store and hospital (Pahrump, NV). The closest major metropolitan area with major shopping centers, airport, and primary medical care is Las Vegas, which is around two and a half hours from the park.
Death Valley winters are mild, rarely reaching freezing at low elevations. Death Valley summers are long, and extreme! April through October usually feature 100+ degree daytime highs, with July featuring numerous 120+ degree days and nights that never cool below 100 degrees. This is literally the hottest place on Earth, having set a global high temperature of 134 degrees.
Government housing may be available near headquarters at Cow Creek or 20 miles from headquarters at Stovepipe Wells. Employees may live outside of the park in Pahrump, NV. Park housing is awarded based on a bid system, with points given according to a variety of job related and personal factors. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will be in a non-pay status for approximately 1 - 2 pay periods, sometime in May to July, and you will be in a pay status for the remainder of the year.
Major Duties:
- Researches, develops, and presents a wide variety of personal and non-personal audience-centered interpretive programs, products, and experiences.
- Serves as front-line representative to greet internal and external customers and respond to comments and inquiries received in-person, by telephone, and in writing; evaluates needs based on verbal and non-verbal cues to provide appropriate levels of service.
- Performs and coordinates day-to-day operations of visitor center, information center, ranger station, or similar facility in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Uses computers, computer software, web/cloud-based systems, and office equipment to assist in the management of a visitor services operation and facilitate park wide communication.
- Serves as a frontline leader and/or supervisor, recruiting and managing temporary personnel (at full-performance level), coordinating day-to-day work assignments, and coaching/mentoring and training team members to achieve high-quality visitor services and professional standards in resource interpretation.

- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Qualifications
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/20/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors or in caves, and carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Some employees engage in firefighting, search and rescue, and other strenuous activities; these employees may be required to lift or carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances. CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
