The West Texas Maintenance Technician maintains facilities, tools and equipment, mechanical systems and vehicles, and preserve areas for the Texas Chapter’s West Texas program. The West Texas program includes the following preserves: Independence Creek, Dolan Falls, Diamond Y Spring, Davis Mountains, Marathon Grasslands, Sandia Springs, and any other preserves that may be acquired in the West Texas area.

The West Texas Maintenance Technician operates heavy machinery, removes invasive species and/or assists in monitoring and researching native and invasive species, assists with coordination of preserve management plans, and may assist in prescribed burns, conservation easement monitoring, and welcoming and assisting guests to the preserves, as needed.

This position will be based at the Independence Creek Preserve near Dryden, TX and requires that you live on the TNC property known as the Foreman House. Travels within West Texas approximately 25% of the time, with periodic overnight and multiple night trips, and work flexible hours that may include weekends.

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair buildings, fences, gates, water systems, and other infrastructure.

  • Service and maintain vehicles, UTVs/ATVs, and heavy equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.

  • Operate heavy machinery for land management activities, including road maintenance and habitat restoration.

  • Remove invasive and exotic species; assist with monitoring and research of native and invasive species.

  • Assist in land management activities that enhance the conservation values of the West Texas preserves, such as herbicide application, mowing/weed-eating, brush control, etc.

  • As needed, maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional night and weekend work, welcome and assist preserve guests, assist in conservation easement monitoring and prescribed fire operations in west Texas and across the state.

What You’ll Bring:

  • AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.

  • Experience working with electrical, plumbing, welding, and concrete.

  • Experience in ecological land management principles.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.

  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.

  • Trade certification(s) in any of the following fields: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, welding, or other, related fields.

  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).

  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers, Email).

  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $37,000 - $42,000. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
