Description

Great Basin Institute, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or seeking to advance their academic standing. In partnership with Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, GBI seeks to hire one Archives Technician to support the park’s museum program.

The Archives Technician will assist the Archives Technician in the processing of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument’s 60 linear feet (LF) of archives backlog and update finding aids. The Archives Technician will ensure that records of the park’s natural and cultural resources are preserved and accessible to researchers and park staff. Other responsibilities include the following:

  • Perform preservation treatments (i.e., flattening oversized documents) and improve storage conditions for archival documents and media;
  • Process and digitize approximately 32 LF of maps, plans, and drawings according to Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) standards;
  • Embed descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata to electronic files and add to museum database
  • Support and fulfill research requests;
  • Perform monthly Integrated Pest Management and housekeeping;
  • Assist the museum staff with a variety of duties as they arise.

Contract Length: 26 weeks, full-time

Compensation/Benefits:

Wage: $23.49 hourly rate

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in fields like Library Science, Museum Studies, Archival Studies, Conservation, or History preferred;
  • Advanced coursework or certification in preservation or conservation is highly valued (e.g., from the American Institute for Conservation or Northeast Document Conservation Center) preferred;
  • Experience in Library Sciences, Archives, Special Collections, or related fields;
  • Prior work in a conservation lab, archives, or museum setting;
  • Experience with preservation assessments and implementing storage upgrades;
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge through work with archival collections, including appraisal, processing, arrangement, description, preservation, and assisting patrons;
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Intermediate or higher skills using Microsoft Word and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;
  • Filemaker Pro experience not required but preferred;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and independently or cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Ability to complete activities involving prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, and regularly walking/driving between curation and other facilities;
  • Possess a valid, clean state-issued driver’s license;
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of the position and the mission of GBI.
