Job Description
Position Description Overview
The GIS Specialist 1 position is responsible for creating and maintaining data layers, conducting wildfire behavior analyses, and producing public facing mapping outputs in the development of Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs). This position also provides mapping support for wildfire mitigation plans, burn plans, and other projects as needed and may mentor and train Assistant GIS Specialists. The GIS Specialist 1 reports to the GIS Program Manager and closely coordinates with respective Project Managers to ensure adherence to project scope, budget, and timeline.
Duties & Responsibilities
Manage the geospatial elements of projects to ensure that deliverables are met within the project budget and Scope of Work (SOW).
Use ArcGIS and other specialized programs to conduct spatial analyses of wildfire behavior and potential impacts, acquire and document data, perform quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and interpret and explain spatial patterns in fire behavior and fire effects.
Produce high-quality maps for incorporation into planning documents and create ArcOnline storymaps that visually summarize important outputs with an accompanying narrative.
Analyze, interpret, and communicate geospatially derived information to clients, partners, and community members including professional presentations and high-quality written material for planning documents.
Other duties as assigned
Employee may be required to travel based on Program needs.
Employee may be required to participate in prescribed fire implementation, suppression, or training up to the level of current qualification (if any), on an as needed basis and determined by supervisor.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Minimum of GIS Certification or equivalent certification.
At least 6 months - 1 year working with GIS technologies.
At least 6 months of high-quality map production that visually communicates important information.
Experience working collaboratively on a team and/or with outside partners.
Proficient using ArcGIS with the ability to edit vector data and conduct basic geoprocessing of vector and raster data.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and technical writing experience.
Competent using Microsoft Suite products including Excel, Word, etc.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
Background in wildfire.
Experience managing and completing time sensitive action items concurrently and within budget across multiple projects.
Experience with wildfire modeling tools and related software for QA/QC, modeling and mapping.
Proficient in coding using R and/or Python.
Demonstrated ability to learn new processes effectively.
Additional Information
Schedule Requirements:
This is an at-will position. The average work week is 40 hours, but the schedule may vary depending on project needs.
Work Location:
Fort Collins Office preferred; remote
Pay and Benefits:
Pay: $30/hour; approximately $62,400 annually.
Benefits: Overtime will be based on operational needs. Paid time off, paid holidays, paid sick leave, paid family leave, unpaid family leave, and leave without pay benefits are provided. A jury duty policy is also in place. Employer-sponsored health, vision, dental care coverage, life insurance, long-term disability are available as soon as employment begins. An employer-matched retirement plan is available 3 months after employment begins and is immediately vested.
