Position Overview

As a Fire Protection Technician, you will be part of a specialized crew working on railroad property to protect infrastructure and resources from fire outbreaks. In this role, you will operate trucks with specialized fire suppression equipment mounted on rail, that will travel behind and work with a rail grinder with the sole purpose of managing and putting out potential fire outbreaks during the operation of the grinder. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work across Canada to gain hands on experience working to maintain and preserve rail infrastructure. The role will involve working in a variety of locations across Canada, including remote rail crossings, rights-of-way and rail yards.

  • Daily Per Diem where required.
  • Hotel expenses covered while on assignment. Double Occupancy.
  • Extended shifts typically 6 weeks on 2 weeks off or 4 weeks on 1 week off. Shift length can vary depending on the season and job.


Job Duties

  • Operate remote-controlled fire suppression equipment in high-risk fire zones.
  • Conduct active fire suppression using hoses, handguns, and fire suppression chemicals.
  • Mix and deploy appropriate fire suppression agents, tailored to wildfire conditions.
  • Actively suppress and manage fires during rail grinder operations.
  • Safely work in proximity to fires, often in challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions.
  • Work on steep slopes, uneven ground, and dense vegetation areas.
  • Operate rail-mounted equipment for fire prevention and suppression.
  • Assist in job-site preparation, debris removal, cleanup, and equipment maintenance.
  • Follow strict safety protocols, adhering to both company and industry standards for fire protection.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure seamless operations in remote and hazardous conditions.
  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with maintenance and safe operation of gas-powered equipment.
  • Valid provincial driver’s license and a clean driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Forest fire work experience considered an asset.
  • Licensed to drive a class 3 vehicle with air / DZ license.
  • Valid First Aid certification is preferred.
  • Enform or Forest Safety Council training preferred.
  • Ability to work safely as part of a team and possess the willingness to learn and progress.

Additional Information

  • Full-time, year-round employment. 40 to 70 hour work weeks, paid weekly.
  • Extended shifts typically 6 weeks on 2 weeks off. Shift length can vary depending on the season and job.
  • Criminal record check required for E-rail safe
  • Daily Per Diem where required.
  • Hotel expenses covered while on assignment. Double occupancy rooming.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Mostly rural locations.
