About the opportunity

SWCA is seeking self-motivated Project Manager – Power & Energy with strong interpersonal skills and experience in project permitting and project management to join our team and support transmission and renewable energy generation projects across the United States. This individual will be a part of the Program Management Core Team, a dynamic and company-wide team to successfully drive projects throughout all phases, from early planning and permitting through construction for one of SWCA’s most important clients. The individual within this Core Team will have the opportunity to work with the nation’s leading energy developers. Program Management Core Team members focus approximately 80% of their time on leading projects and teams focused on our Program Management client, with approximately 20% of their time focused on other clients, interests, or assignments.

The Project Manager will have technical expertise and experience in energy facility siting and constraints studies, permitting, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, and agency interactions as appropriate. The candidate will be experienced in managing staff to complete project permitting requirements and fostering a positive working environment among the project team members.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position based out of our Half Moon Bay, CA office. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience. What you will accomplish

  • Lead, oversee, and execute the management of permitting efforts for transmission and renewable energy projects of the appropriate size and complexity
  • Foster a positive, collaborative working environment among project team members
  • Work closely with project teams across all SWCA offices to navigate permitting challenges and meet client needs
  • Take initiative and resolve issues to assure Program Managements needs are met effectively
  • Help lead and advise on the development of permitting strategies, provide QA/QC of work processes and deliverables, and lead teams completing technical studies that support permitting efforts
  • Manage projects that include NEPA compliance, biological resource assessments and constraints analyses, state and federal Endangered Species Act consultations, Clean Water Act Section 404 and Section 401 permitting, and cultural resources studies
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide project-specific technical support to junior staff
  • Work with SWCA’s accounting department to review invoices, expenditures, and project audits for projects and tasks
  • Work closely with SWCA’s resource scientists, environmental planners, managers, and directors in both natural and cultural resources groups throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values
  • Implement and administer SWCA’s safety procedures and standards of scientific and professional ethics
  • Takes responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipating potential safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in planning, biology, environmental science, natural resources management, archaeology, anthropology, geology, or a related field.
  • Seven (7) years of combined experience in project management; environmental consulting; or ecological, archaeological, or geographical studies.
  • Two (2) years of project management experience.
  • Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of federal (e.g., NEPA, National Historic Preservation Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act) and state laws governing natural resources management.
  • Demonstrated experience with transmission and renewable energy projects and with federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and with state and local agencies.
  • Experience with supervising staff and project teams.
  • Experience and ability to manage projects in diverse settings and with changing requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced work environment and desire to work in a highly collaborative team atmosphere.

An employee in this Half Moon Bay, CA position can expect an annual salary of $88,452.00 - $114,660.00 Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
