GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Geographic Information Systems Technician in Cheyenne, WY. The primary responsibilities of this position are to update, maintain and standardize authoritative geospatial data; produce maps involved in the signage of Commission-managed lands; support Department end-users; configure web maps and applications; and complete metadata and workflow documentation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.


  • Update and standardize wildlife-related GIS data layers
  • Accurately interpret pseudo-legal written boundary descriptions to create or edit spatial boundaries
  • Check and verify accuracies of geometry, attribute data and metadata
  • Produce maps as assigned
  • Document major procedures and workflows
  • Complete other GIS projects as assigned, including creating web maps and configuring mobile data collection applications
  • Provide GIS technical support and workflow guidance for Department biologists and other end-users

Qualifications


PREFERENCES:


Preference is given for any combination of training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in GIS (Geographic
Information Systems), Geography, Geospatial Technologies, or a related field.
Preference will be given to applicants with training and/or experience in applying GIS principles in a working or learning environment using Esri's suite of geospatial solutions, including ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online, and mobile application solutions.


KNOWLEDGE:


  • Understanding of the basic concepts and principles of GIS, including data acquisition and automation, spatial data organization, projections, map cartography, project workflows, and data analysis
  • Hands-on experience navigating and utilizing the core toolsets within ArcGIS Pro for day-to-day spatial tasks
  • Strong skills in creating, editing, and digitizing highly accurate vector data (points, lines, and polygons)
  • Understanding of topology rules to identify and fix geometric errors like gaps, overlaps, or self-intersections
  • Cartography skills to design map layouts and produce presentation-ready maps for public reference
  • Ability to write clear, structured metadata following a template to ensure data lineage is documented
  • Baseline ability to interpret variously sourced aerial photography and satellite imagery to identify landscape features
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve common GIS errors or issues for less technical users
  • ArcGIS Online familiarity and basic experience
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data entry, organization and manipulation
  • Basic understanding of or active interest in learning about fish, wildlife, and natural resource management data
  • Organizational skills to track incoming project requests and manage minor technical projects under light supervision
  • Oral and written communication skills

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • Duration of Employment: Through June 30, 2027; position may be renewed for a subsequent extension through 6/30/2028, pending satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
