GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hiring 4 field technicians to conduct surveys for wolverines. Positions will start on 2 November 2026 and run through 30 April 2027 and will be based out of Lander or Pinedale. Surveys include substantial hiking, skiing, and snowmobiling throughout high-elevation habitats in the winter to deploy and maintain remote cameras coupled with bait and lure. Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, equipment maintenance, data entry, and photo identification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.


  • Follow approved protocols to conduct surveys for wolverines, including deploying remote cameras and collecting genetic samples
  • Follow approved bear safety protocols while setting and pulling remote cameras
  • Safely navigate and travel in remote backcountry locations in winter conditions
  • Collect, enter, and proof data with close attention to detail, including identifying photos to species
  • Organize, maintain, and repair field equipment, including gathering and processing bait
  • Communicate with a variety of individuals, including state and federal agency personnel, to coordinate and schedule surveys

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:


Preference will be given to those with a high school degree plus 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development OR at least 2 years of college coursework towards or completion of a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management or a closely related field.

Preference will also be given to those with previous experience safely working and navigating in remote locations in winter conditions, particularly those who have completed avalanche safety courses.

**Agency requires that the successful applicant have a valid driver’s license.


KNOWLEDGE:


  • Prior outdoor experience, such as field work or backcountry camping, especially in winter conditions and inclement weather
  • Prior experience with safely backcountry skiing/splitboarding/telemarking and snowmobiling, particularly in a professional setting
  • Ability to collect detailed and accurate wildlife survey data according to protocols both independently and in close cooperation with others
  • Experience using hand-held GPS and maps for navigation and data collection
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in challenging conditions and work well in close quarters with field crews for extended periods of time
  • Ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle and snowmobiles on- or off-road in winter conditions, including pulling campers, trailers, etc.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able and willing to safely travel and conduct field surveys in remote, backcountry conditions in the winter, and likely under adverse weather conditions
  • Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including long hours and weekends
  • Must be in excellent physical condition and able to safely hike, ski, and snowmobile long distances in rugged terrain in winter conditions, while carrying cumbersome equipment (up to 50 pounds), including bait and lure
  • Must be willing to perform extensive travel across the state in government vehicles

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Necessary field equipment, including field vehicles, backpacks, groceries/housing while in the field will be provided. Housing during off time in Lander / Pinedale will not be provided. Employees may be asked to utilize hotels while performing fieldwork, which will involve paying for hotel room at time of use and receiving reimbursement later.
