GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is looking for a motivated Soils & Surfacing Lab Technician to join its team in Cheyenne and play a key role in building and maintaining Wyoming’s transportation infrastructure. In this hands-on position, you’ll work under the guidance of experienced professionals to help ensure the state’s highways and roadways meet the highest standards of safety and performance.
You’ll perform testing activities for the assigned section applying industry standards from organizations such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), along with WYDOT specifications. Your work will include testing, reviewing data, and generating reports that guide critical decisions in roadway construction and materials quality. By contributing your technical skills and attention to detail, you’ll help deliver a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system that serves communities across Wyoming.Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.- Performs testing, inspection, or data collection using sophisticated equipment and complex procedures to ensure specification compliance or for engineering analysis and design
- Performs training and reviews competency to qualify entry level technicians
- Decides which tests to perform and performs them with expertise and accuracy
- Maintains accuracy and repeatability of tests and testing results
- Cleans, maintains, repairs and calibrates instruments and equipment
- Performs data analysis
- Completes appropriate work assignments
- Ensures sample information is entered into LIMS tracking system accurately and samples are prepared for testing in accordance with procedures
- Performs trial mix designs for hot plant mix, cold in place recycling, and stabilized full depth reclamation work
- Communicates issues with equipment manufacturers and repair technicians
- Monitors supplies and inventory levels
- Travels occasionally to aid with testing for volumetric projects
- Resolves discrepancies
Qualifications
-
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to candidates with 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in a Laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis Technician.
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of practical applications of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry
- Knowledge of concrete and asphalt mix design methods, materials science and materials properties
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of specialized instruments and equipment in order to perform diagnostics and repair
- Knowledge of AASHTO R18, Establishing and Implementing a Quality Management System for Construction Materials Testing Laboratories
- Knowledge of calibration procedures for equipment
- Knowledge of highway construction/fabrication materials and procedures
- Knowledge of quality control procedures
- Knowledge of safety procedures
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:Associate's Degree (typically in Civil and Environmental Engineering)Experience:0-2 years of progressive work experience (Transportation occupational group and Laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis TechnicianOREducation & Experience Substitution:2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in a Transportation occupational group and Laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis TechnicianCertificates, Licenses, Registrations:None

Qualifying Reasons
Acceptance of a permanent full-time non-exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment
Temporary employees accepting a full-time or part-time permanent position
Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public
One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.
Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12 month period.
If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
