We’re currently looking for a passionate and driven Geologist I to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In this role, you’ll conduct geological and geotechnical investigations that directly support the engineering division’s efforts to design and develop Wyoming’s highway infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • Reviews maps, photographs, plans, site history, and engineering data; conducts site visits and obtains permits as part of the preliminary investigation
  • Assists in making field arrangements for traffic control and utility locates; communicates with WYDOT Personnel, consultants, other agencies, and the public and private sector
  • Directs the work activities of all field geological testing and sampling, as well as the drilling team in all weather conditions, difficult terrain, and around heavy equipment
  • Completes field investigations, which include the accurate locating of test holes, sample collection, testing, and documentation of data under close supervision
  • Evaluates and maps geologic formations and engineering features in the field using aerial photos, plans, cross-sections, and geologic maps
  • Obtains engineering surveys, topographic maps, GPS, and aerial photo data to determine ground control for field information
  • Cares for samples and completes all forms required for delivery to the Geology and Materials Labs, and assists the labs in the identification of soil and rock composition and specific lab testing
  • Analyzes and plots all survey, engineering, geological, and laboratory data while utilizing computer drafting and geotechnical software
  • Writes detailed geotechnical and geological reports under close supervision based on analysis, evaluation, and design
  • Submits reports, including survey, laboratory data, design analysis, and drawings to provide recommendations to WYDOT Programs and Districts, other agencies, and consultants

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of soils and geology
  • Knowledge of geological research methods and techniques
  • Skills in oral and written communication
  • Skills in the use of computers, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing
  • Skills in interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to present facts related to geology and engineering
  • Ability to use equipment such as driving a support vehicle, working with sampling tools, use drafting and surveying instruments and geotechnical testing tools
  • Ability to accept responsibility, make decisions, and learn from superiors

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (in Geology/Geotechnical Engineering)
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience in Geology
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Must be able to work year-round in all types of weather
  • Must be able to work around drilling equipment and on highways adjacent to traffic
  • Must be able to work in or near water (streams, rivers, lakes), occasionally investigating structures and wetlands
  • This position requires extensive state-wide overnight travel required approximately 30-40% of the time.

    • Temporary employees accepting a part time permanent position
    • Acceptance of a permanent full-time non-exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment
    • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public
    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12 month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
