Northeast Region is actively seeking a Regulation and Prevention Technician (Wildland Fire Management Supervisor) for our North Columbia fire unit, located in Colville, WA. The Regulation and Prevention Technician is responsible for wildfire suppression, prevention and regulation throughout our region, including state trust lands. The North Columbia Unit conducts suppression actions on an average of 120 fire starts annually, processes approximately 75 burn permit requests annually, and provides training courses to local cooperators. Interagency cooperation occurs on the majority of the wildland fires and in most fire training courses. Interagency cooperation includes working with local fire districts, state, and federal partners, and is a key function of these positions.

Duties

Responsibilities:
The Regulation and Prevention Technician has a great influence on the quality, image and message delivered to the general public of Washington State. This position works closely with stakeholders and other agencies and plays a leadership role in fire suppression activities. The majority of the duties will include administering and approving burn permits, interpreting/applying fire regulations and IFPL restrictions, conducting wildland fire investigations, and fire suppression. This position will act as a Wildland Fire Investigator regularly. The Regulation and Prevention Technician will work closely with fire suppression resources to suppress and prevent the spread of wildland fire. Other duties will include, but are not limited to, being a lead and/or unit instructor for NWCG fire courses for wildland fire training, leading, and participating in wildland fire prevention activities. The Northeast Region is a fast-paced and complex work environment that requires an individual who will work within the team goals and dynamics to be successful.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years' experience in wildland fire management, natural resource, forestry, or related field;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • NWCG Qualifications:
    • Any Single Resource Boss qualification.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Positions assigned duty station is the Colville Headquarters building. Work is performed in an office setting (40%) and alone in isolated, unimproved natural areas within the unit (60%). Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. These duties may involve fieldwork requiring physical performance, calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning.
  • This position will be assigned an agency vehicle. Position requires significant driving and field visits within the geographic area assigned.
  • A current, valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Must pass work capacity test annually at the arduous level as required by NWCG.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Forestry, or other related field;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • NWCG Qualifications:
    • 2 NWCG Single Resource Boss qualifications (1 must either be Engine Boss or Crew Boss)
    • NWCG Incident Commander Type 4
    • NWCG Wildland Fire Investigator
  • Skilled in supervision, leadership and management of people.
  • Experience in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, mapping, and Global Positioning technology.
