• Maintaining road infrastructure for management needs, safety, and resource protection utilizing a variety of heavy equipment (typically dozer, grader, dump truck and tilt trailer, and excavator as needed) throughout the Klickitat Area of the SE Region in a variety of challenging conditions and terrain;
• Leading the Klickitat Heavy Equipment Crew, including planning, scheduling, and assignment of work with a focus on prioritization and efficiency; Instructing, directing, assigning work, and mentoring the Heavy Equipment Operator 2 position;
• Performing preventative maintenance (in consultation with region mechanics) on heavy equipment;
• Arranging for equipment rentals as necessary for projects, including the determination of equipment type and scheduling;
• Completing all appropriate paperwork related to heavy equipment crew activities;
• Assisting other programs as needed, including but not limited to timber sale road maintenance, snow plowing, recreation site maintenance and improvement, recreational use road maintenance and improvement, emergency road repairs to DNR road infrastructure, special projects requiring heavy equipment operations;
• Initial attack support for fire control.

Responsibilities:

• Road Maintenance Operations, including operating heavy equipment for road maintenance activities.
• Equipment Lead, including instructing and directing an equipment operator, project and equipment scheduling, project management, completion of department administrative paperwork, and purchasing of minor supplies.
• Equipment maintenance, including assisting in arranging service, lubrication, minor adjustments, and repairs.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience operating a pickup-sized vehicle in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
• Experience safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment such as: CAT 143H grader, CAT D-5 dozer, excavator, vibratory roller, 10 cubic yard tandem axle diesel dump truck and 20-ton tilt bed trailer, backhoe w/ front end loader, 40-foot boom truck, power brush cutter, and various hand tools needed for maintenance (welder, cutting torch, etc.).
• Experience performing minor maintenance, troubleshooting, and identifying needed repairs to heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of state motor vehicle laws, including those about the use and transportation of heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of Washington State Forest Practice standards (rules, RMAP procedures, requirements), state laws, and department procedures.
• Effective communication skills.

• The assigned duty station is the Klickitat Work Center in Glenwood, WA. Position requires both office (15%) and fieldwork (85%). Duty assignments will be primarily in the Klickitat District; however, depending on the needs of the district, region, or agency, assignments may occur outside of the district. Position requires work on native and rocky forest roads in various weather conditions using a variety of heavy equipment to perform maintenance tasks.
• Position may require occasional travel (5%) outside of the Klickitat District for temporary assignments, meetings, training sessions, and fire assignments.
• A valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license with a CDL endorsement A with air brakes. Pre-employment CDL verification, work history background check, and drug testing will be required as a condition of employment. This position may be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.

• Five years of experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment of more than five tons rated capacity, including heavy bulldozers, graders, excavators, and similar construction equipment on forest road construction and maintenance projects.
• Five years of experience in operating bulldozers and dump trucks with tilt bed trailers, on wildland fires.
• Familiarity with GPS usage, maps, and aerial photos.
