The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity. The Olympic Region is actively seeking a Consulting Forester to work with our team of State Lands staff who manage DNR’s forest trust lands. Working with the region’s State Lands team, the duties of this position include providing support for fish and wildlife management within DNR’s Olympic Region and consulting with staff from the region’s timber sale, engineering, recreation, and asset management programs. Consultations include old-growth assessments, stand development stage assessments, wetland delineation, stream typing, and more. In addition to consulting with State Land Foresters, this position will be the project manager for the Type 3 Watershed Experiment in the Olympic Experimental State Forest. This position will be tasked with ensuring accurate execution of the research plans in accordance with the T3 Watershed Experiment.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Olympic Region’s State Lands with various consulting needs relative to habitat and forest management
  • Support and manage the implementation and execution of the T3 Watershed Experiment
  • Conduct Old Growth assessments and other habitat delineations
  • Consult with staff regarding timber sales, silviculture activities, engineering, and recreation projects
  • Establish strong working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science, forest ecology, or a closely related field;
    OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Professional experience in a natural resource program area.
  • Knowledge of general forest management theory (timber management planning, silviculture, appraisal techniques, timber sales, contract preparation and administration, forest fire prevention and suppression, logging and forest road construction, reforestation methods, public relations, statistical analysis).
  • Experience with navigating using mobile devices, maps, aerial photos, a compass, and GPS.
  • Experience using MS Word, MS Excel, ArcGIS, and an aptitude for learning new software programs.
  • Experience with contract compliance.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups, both internal and external.
  • Ability to inspect, instruct, and work with contract crews to ensure prescriptions are met.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • This position will obtain sub-permittee status on the region electrofishing permits.
  • The position works from an assigned duty station. A majority of the work is performed in isolated, unimproved natural forestry settings. The individual must be able to traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Office work requires the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desks, files, cabinets, computers, telephones, copy machines, etc.).
  • This position will travel throughout the Olympic Region. Must be able to operate a 4x4 vehicle. This position also involves occasional travel to Olympia or other parts of the state for meetings and/or trainings. Employees are eligible for per diem and lodging costs when in travel status, except when provided.
  • A valid, unrestricted driver’s license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Four years of professional forestry field experience involving the design and layout of timber sales, forest roads, administration of timber sale contracts, or professional cruising.
  • Two years of experience using GPS and ArcGIS products.
  • Knowledge of DNR management principles and forest land planning and timber management planning, including Forest Practices rules, the Habitat.
  • Conservation Plan, and the Olympic Experimental State Forest.
  • Working knowledge of timber harvest, logging practices, silviculture practices, and forest road construction/engineering.
