Salary: $6,735.00 - $9,065.00 Monthly

This position is responsible for all upland management activities on approximately 90,000 acres of trust lands managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in the Straits District. Represents the Region’s interests to private operators, business, governmental officials, tribal governments, and the public where there is involvement in complex, sensitive issues affecting the District. This position provides input and recommends action on project proposals influencing state trust lands. Manages 4 professional staff and having responsibilities for 11 permanent staff including hiring, training, and disciplinary action. Manages district timber sale staff to achieve a timber sale cut of approximately 40 million board feet sales annually and the administration of approximately 10-15 timber sales annually. In addition, is accountable to achieve all RMAP engineering, ensuring all existing and newly constructed roads are maintained and built to Forest Practice Standards, land management, asset management and Silviculture (young stand management) program deliverables/standards in the district by planning and services coordination with appropriate program regional leads.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, leads, organizes, and controls the work performed by the organization.
  • Manages state trust uplands for highest and best use, while generating acceptable returns on investments, maintaining future options and protecting public resources.
  • Practices risk management when planning, leading, and organizing work performed within the Straits work unit.
  • Be an active participant in the region management team.
  • Provides leadership in building and maintaining relationships with groups that hold a stake in how trust lands are managed within the work units.
  • Mentor staff and provide a positive working environment where people are respected and valued professionally.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in forestry or a related natural sciences field;
    AND 5 years of relevant experience;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management planning and silvicultural principles.
  • Knowledge of Washington SEPA process, Forest Practices rules, laws and practices and associated agency policies.
  • Knowledge of logging and forest road construction practices and technology.
  • Ability to develop programs, timelines, and track accomplishments.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to articulate expectations, develop and mentor staff, and ensure accountability.
  • Ability to monitor complex budgets

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • This position works in the office and in the field. Field work requires driving on steep remote forest roads, traversing adverse terrain, weather, and active equipment on timber harvest operations.
  • This position is required to travel. Overnight travel is required statewide 2-4 times per year, generally, in 1-2 night increments.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience making public presentations.
  • Current knowledge of forest practice statutes, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, agency practices and general forest management theory (such as forest tire prevention and suppression techniques, forest health Issues, silviculture; logging and forest road construction equipment and use: hazardous fuels reduction techniques, and public relations).
  • Knowledge of agency business practices, particularly related to forest practices.
  • Knowledge of agency policies, practices and procedures.
