The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is home to Washington’s largest on-call fire department that is responsible for protecting over 13 million acres in both state and privately-owned lands. Working with interagency partners, DNR embraces an all hands all lands vision. DNR’s Fire Program serves the communities of Washington, and are strong advocates of wildland fire prevention, suppression, and mitigation. The DNR is looking for a bright, quick-thinking individual to fill the role of the Assistant Fire Unit Manager for Coast Unit in Olympic Region. This position is perfect for those that enjoy hazard-risk mitigation, collaborating with interagency peers, and using professional judgment to determine necessary resources during fire season. This individual will be expected to provide critical leadership in initial and extended attack fire suppression. Strong decision-making skills and a desire to take on responsibility are valued and encouraged. Responsibilities:
This position assists in providing leadership and oversight of the fire program in West Clallam and West Jefferson Counties for Washington DNR. You will have responsibility of hiring, training, and providing daily leadership for 1 Wildland Fire Management Supervisor, 2 engine module leaders and 6 firefighters.Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- Certified as a NWCG Single Resource Boss.
- Certified NWCG Incident Commander Type 5.
- Supervisory Experience.
- Experience in agreement and contract negotiations.
- Team effectiveness- understanding and ability to increase team effectiveness by focusing on situational awareness, communication skills, teamwork, task allocation and decision-making within a framework of standard operating procedures.
- Ability to empower employees to create an effective workforce.

- Must currently possess and maintain a NWCG Single Resource Boss qualification.
- Must currently possess and maintain a NWCG Incident Commander Type 5 qualification.
- Must pass work capacity test annually at the arduous level required by current red card qualifications.
- Field and Office: This position’s assigned duty station is the Forks Work Center. Work is performed in an office setting (30%) and alone in isolated unimproved natural areas within the unit (70%). Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Must be able to carry appropriate tools on field assignments, as needed, to conduct assigned tasks.
- This position requires travel (50%) to the field for project work, fires, or supervision, attend meetings or various trainings. Frequent overnight travel is required for trainings, meetings, and fire assignments.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Associate's degree in Fire Science, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field.
- Task Force Leader and IC Type 4 NWCG qualifications.
- Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2).
- Commitment to continual learning and adaption to technology advances.
- Skills in evaluating others’ abilities and assessing training needs.
- Facilitative skills to work with groups of people to solve issues.
