What we are looking for:

As the State Lands Forester you will perform tasks associated with program goals which contribute to the mission of the Oregon Department of Forestry, as assigned by the Unit Forester. The actions carried out by this position are to assist in development and implementation of annual operations plans to achieve the goals and objectives of the Forest Management Plan and District Implementation Plan. Assigned tasks to accomplish this include field and office preparation of timber sale contracts for State Forest management activities. Duties include:

  • Recon proposed sale areas for timber sale boundaries, roads and landing locations, and other site-specific considerations such as high-risk sites, insect and disease problems, reforestation considerations, logging options and environmental safeguards.
  • Perform Upper Extent Fish Use/Seasonality Stream Surveys and enter data into GIS.
  • Post timber sale boundaries and buffers.
  • Develop timber cruise design and cruises timber for species composition, volume, grade, and defect.
  • Prepare timber cruise for computation.
  • Prepare timber sale contract including contract provisions, exhibits and associated reports.
  • Identify road, R/W, culvert, turnout, landing and waste area locations for new construction and road improvements. Lays out and marks these areas in the field.
  • Identify road related hazards. Consults with Area Geo-tech Specialist and Roads Specialist as needed.
  • Conduct stocking surveys on young stands and evaluate overall stand health and vigor.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resource program

OR
Three years of experience in Forestry or a closely related natural resource program.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in determining location of timber sale boundaries, stream buffers, estimate of timber size and defect, and logging feasibility analysis.
  • Experience in determining road location, road costing, and forest road construction methods.
  • Experience, training or education with computers and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience in tree planting inspections and evaluating reforested stand health and vigor.
  • Ability to make Field Decisions such as - Compliance with the NW Oregon Forest Management Plan, District IP, AOP, and timber sale contract, and compliance with Oregon Fire laws and Forest Practices Rules.
  • Skill effectively communicating verbally and in writing with a variety of people to answer questions and explain information.
  • Skill writing clear and concise status, summary, technical, or narrative reports.
