Your New Role – Community Wildfire Forester

The purpose of of this position is to administer the Forest Resources Program (FR Program) in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties. Administration includes~

  • Assist landowners obtain their land management objectives.
  • Provide for the societial values of the citizens of this state by offering forestry and fire prevention educational and technical assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources.
  • Provide professional forestry advice to landowners and operators concerning forest management, fire prevention and administration of the Forest Practices Act and fire prevention laws.
  • Provide field and administrative support to hazardous fuel treatment and Forest management initiatives funded by the National Fire Plan and Natural Resource Conservation Service on the PrinevilleSister Unit.
  • Provide technical assistance and education to homeowners for hazard fuel reduction efforts and SB360 requirements.
  • Provide coordination of fuel reduction effort by other unit employees.
  • Give technical support in fire planning, fire investigation and fire operations development planning.
  • Act as fire overhead on in-district and state fires.

Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of experience in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program and a Bachelor's degree in Forestry, a closely related natural resources program, or three additional years of related pertinent experience

OR
One year of experience in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program and a Master's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program.


Requested Skills:

  • Experience that requires a competent level of knowledge, skills and abilities in geographic information system and global positioning system applications, software operation and database management.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate technical data and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with other Department staff and professionals in Federal organizations.
  • Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with external cooperators, field managers and department personnel subject to program audits in order to effectively implement changes.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software to communicate information and technical data.
  • Able to attain Class A and B Warden within trail service period.
