The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,218 - $3,948/mo.) as the department may consider under-filling the position.
This full-time, limited duration position is located in Lakeview and is expected to last through June 30, 2025.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least June 30, 2025. WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Conduct field work activities for data collection, including capture mule deer from helicopters, capture mule deer neonates, conduct mortality investigations of dead deer, capture coyotes, cougars, and black bears, conduct aerial telemetry flights, collect biological samples, assist with identification of suitable capture locations, and interact with landowners to access private property.
Maintain project equipment and order supplies necessary for conducting the research project, including ordering chemical immobilization drugs, maintaining ATVs and snowmobiles. Data management and entry including enter data from capture records into an electronic database and enter other data from paper forms into databases.
Coordination and Administration tasks, such as: attend mandatory Agency trainings and pursue professional development opportunities. Assist with other data collection efforts such as deploy camera traps, and assist with vegetation sampling.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This job requires working at a computer to enter, compile, summarize, and manage data and send electronic correspondence. Office work may require long periods of standing or sitting and frequent bending or stooping.
Employee is required to lift and carry materials.
This position requires occasional use of a firearm and munitions to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The intended use does not include physical force, personal protection, or personal use. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting to verify s/he may legally possess a firearm and munitions before being hired into this position, and the employee will be subject to annual checks during employment. Training must be taken prior to using or transporting a firearm.
Job requires being able to conduct aerial telemetry flights to locate radio collared animals.
Employee will work with other people and trap mule deer, elk and cougars and other wildlife.
Office work may require long periods of standing or sitting and frequent bending or stooping.
Oregon driver's license and good driving record are required. Job requires maintaining a valid driver’s license and good driving records.
This position requires an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Holder of this position must be able to navigate across rough terrain in varying field and weather conditions in summer and winter using pickup trucks, all terrain vehicles in summer and snow mobiles in winter.
The duties of this position may include the use of a SPOTS Card for work-related purchases as a benefit to the agency. Prior to being issued a SPOTS Card the employee must meet all necessary requirements in accordance with ODFW Policy ASD_250_03-SPOTS, including completing the ODFW SPOTS Card training. Continued eligibility to possess and use a SPOTS Card requires that the holder remain in full compliance with ODFW Policy ASD_250_03_SPOTS. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting and will be subject to annual checks during employment.
This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Fish and Wildlife Technician ($3477 - $4755):
An Associate's degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture;
-OR-
Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (six months of fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.
Fish and Wildlife Technician Entry Option ($3218 - $3948):
Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.
DESIRED SKILLS:
Proficient in use of computers and electronic devices for data collection and management.
Demonstrated experience in the capture and restraint or drug immobilization of wild animals.Experience using ATVs and snowmobiles on and off trails.
Experience using 4x4 vehicles on roads in inclement conditions including mud and snow.
Experience towing trailers with vehicles.
Experience ordering, maintaining, and inventorying project equipment.
Experience collecting and recording data as part of research or monitoring projects.
Experience and ability to make presentations to public and professional groups on purpose and results of research.
Experience using Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Access.
Experience conducting aerial telemetry flights to locate radio collared animals, navigate using GPS receivers, and be able to use other electronic equipment as needed to meet research objectives.
Experience conducting field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from cold in winter to heat in summer.
CRIMINAL RECORDS/DMV CHECK:
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.
