Are you looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to learn some new skills? We may have just what you have been looking for! The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has an opening for a permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician located at the John Day Screen Shop, John Day, Oregon.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill the positions at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,218 - $3,948/mo.) as the department may consider under-filling the position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As a Fish and Wildlife Screens Technician you will manufacture, install, and repair fish screening and passage facilities. Technical and manual labor duties for the protection of fish species include:

  • Assist the Regional fish screen and passage staff in the implementation of fish screen and passage projects:

  • Assist with the building of new or the reassembly of concrete forms.

  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.

  • Operation and maintenance of shop equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.

  • Ability to use project blueprints to construct and implement fish screen and passage projects.

  • Complete projects to screening and passage design criteria.

  • Assist with project site survey, excavation for form installation, setting forms and installation of structural steel, use of ATV to

  • access remote project sites.

  • Assist with crews in pouring and finishing concrete fish screen and passage structures.

  • Assist with the removal of forms, backfill, by-pass pipe installation and site cleanup.

  • Assist with the welding, fabrication and installation of fish screen and passage components.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of fish screens and passage structures by periodic inspections. Performs minor maintenance (inspection, lubrication, cleaning) and major maintenance (fabrication, replacement and repair of screen and passage components) on fish screens and passage structures as needed. Use of ATV to access remote project sites.

  • Responds to water user’s complaints regarding malfunctioning fish screens and passage structures on their property. Schedules repairs or modifications of fish screen and passage systems as needed. Maintains records of fish screen and passage systems constructed, installed and repaired.

  • Provides technical direction and guidance for water users and private contractors who choose to design, construct, install, operate and maintain their own fish screen and passage systems, located throughout the region. Technical direction and guidance activities involve welding, carpentry, masonry, mechanics, assembly and cleaning of screen and passage systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a work week. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.

  • Frequent travel, often involving overnight stays.

  • Maintenance and construction work in and around water.

  • Frequent use of trucks and equipment, hand and power tools, including welders.

  • Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds of construction materials, or more with assistance.

  • Occasionally required to walk long distances, carrying tools and supplies to some structure sites.

  • Occasionally performs duties independently or with minimal supervision.

  • This position requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.

  • A valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required as a condition of employment in this position. The employee is responsible for the cost of the CDL and for physicals required to hold a CDL. The employee in this position must participate in the agency's drug and alcohol testing program for CDL holders as outlined in HR Policy HR_480_07 as a condition of employment. This includes drug and alcohol testing on a random, reasonable suspicion, post accident, return to duty and follow-up basis. Cost associated with required drug and alcohol testing are paid by the department.

  • This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Fish & Wildlife Technician Option ($3,477 - $4,755/mo):

An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science;

- OR -

Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.

Fish and Wildlife Technician Entry Option ($3,218 - $3,948/mo):
Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.

CRIMINAL RECORDS/DMV CHECK:

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
