Location & Duration:
Based out of Central Point, OR, this is a full time, limited duration position starting July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least June 30, 2025. The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,218 - $3,948/mo.), as the department may consider under-filling the positions.
What you will do:
The primary role of this position is to implement the construction, installation, operation and maintenance of fish screens and fish passage devices in Southwestern Oregon. Fish Screens Technician will manufacture, install and repair fish screening and passage facilities. This position will also perform a variety of technical and manual labor duties for the protection of fish species. Some of the duties will include:
- Assist fish regional screening staff as assigned by performing manual labor and operating heavy equipment (Backhoe, excavator/trackhoe, fork-lift, etc.). Construct and fabricate fish screen systems and passage devices involving metal components, concrete forms and other associated parts and materials for installation at water diversions.
- Construction/fabrication activities involve welding, carpentry, masonry, equipment operation, mechanics and assembly of screening systems.
- Monitor the effectiveness of fish screens by periodic inspections. Perform minor maintenance (inspection, lubrication, cleaning) and major maintenance (solar repairs, fabrication, replacement and repair of screen components using skills such as welding) on fish screens as needed.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, tools, parts and supplies necessary to construct, repair and maintain fish screening systems. Determine and recommend purchases for screening tools, parts and supplies to the supervisor.

Working Conditions:
- Exposure to adverse weather conditions. Requires maintenance and construction work in and around water.
- May require travel up to a week at a time.
- Frequent operation of construction related equipment, concrete vibrators, pumps, hand tools, power saws and heavy equipment.
- Occasional lifting of construction materials of up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
- Occasionally required to walk long distances, carrying tools and supplies to structure sites.
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Fish & Wildlife Technician Option:
- An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR
- Eighteen months of experience in fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming.
A higher level degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.
- Note: You do not need to meet the Fish & Wildlife Technician minimum qualifications to be considered: the department may consider underfilling at the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level.
Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry Option - Underfill:
- Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications. Previous related experience is desirable).
Requested Skills:
- Using hand and power tools
- Using a Metallic Inert Gas (MIG), Plasma cutter, arc welder and cutting torches
- Forming, pouring and finishing concrete
- Operating heavy equipment (such as excavator/track hoe, forklift, and backhoe)
- Writing progress or technical reports
- Basic computer experience, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word
- Knowledge and experience troubleshooting solar/electrical systems.
Criminal Records/DMV Check:
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
