Job Description:

Near Florence, Oregon is located less than a mile from the renowned Salmon Harbor Marina on Winchester Bay—famous for top-notch crabbing and sport fishing—Umpqua Lighthouse State Park offers a scenic and dynamic work environment. The park’s campground and developed day-use areas sit alongside the serene, non-motorized Lake Marie, where visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, picnicking, paddling, and relaxing on a small sandy beach.

Your New Role

As a seasonal, full-time Park Ranger Assistant, you work alongside year-round State Park staff to help protect, maintain, and operate Oregon’s treasured park lands. Your role may involve tasks in janitorial work, landscaping, visitor services, and park interpretation. Some assignments may also include basic building trades like carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and more. You might also be asked to guide volunteers or seasonal team members in day-to-day projects. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the preservation and enjoyment of one of the state’s most beautiful coastal parks.

We recruit for seasonal positions each year that generally work June through September; however, the duration may vary depending on the park's specific needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six (6) months of experience (paid or unpaid) performing public contact or customer service duties (e.g. Teacher, Customer Service Representative, Salesperson, Receptionist, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping, custodial, etc.);

OR

  • Six (6) months of college in any discipline (24 quarter hours/16 semester hours)

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of employment.

Desired Attributes:

  • Experience working as a member of team to accomplish tasks and achieve goals.

  • Experience answering routine inquiries, explaining rules and regulations based on observation, knowledge, and understanding within a public setting.

  • Experience using common courtesy and maintaining composure during emergency or emotionally charged situations, such as contact with upset guests.

  • Experience in using computerized registration equipment and programs.

  • Experience in making change, maintaining a cash drawer, and preparing simple cash reconciliation reports.

  • Experience in the performance of basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, custodial maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks.

  • Experience using hand tools, motorized equipment, or power tools related to plumbing, carpentry, painting, custodial maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks
