Job Description:

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

We are hiring for one full-time, seasonal position located in Springfield, Oregon. It is anticipated that this seasonal position will last from June 8, 2026 through December 11, 2026.

What you will do:

You will act as a project assistant within the Native Fish Investigations Program by providing technical support for research and monitoring activities for Bull Trout in the Willamette Basin. You will be responsible for the independent collection of data, conducting office and field work, and overseeing the work of 1-3 Biological Science Assistants, as needed. This involves assisting in crew training, developing work schedules, quality control of collected data, data entry, and summary analysis. Field methods for this project include redd surveys, screw trap operation, snorkeling, measuring and PIT-tagging fish, and installing and operating PIT tag detection systems, among others.

What we are looking for:

Minimum Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, all applicants must meet one of the following options:

• Option 1: Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

• Option 2: A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework.

Desired Attributes:

• Familiar with fish sampling techniques, including redd surveys, snorkeling, and operation of weirs and screw traps

• Familiar with operation of PIT tag detection systems

• Experience safely handling federally or state-listed fish species

• Familiar with Bull Trout life history and identification of fishes of Cascade Mountains drainages

• Experience directing activities of a field sampling crew.
