The OSFM is recruiting two (2) Deputy State Fire Marshal (DSFM) positions that support Oregon’s Fire & Life Safety Codes program. Both positions share similar responsibilities, with each role having a slightly different area of focus. Below is a summary of each position along with a link to the full position description. Codes DSFM Position Description:
(Focus in Oregon Fire Code & Plans Reviews)
This position supports the development and implementation of Oregon’s Fire and Life Safety Codes program. This role ensures compliance with state fire protection statutes by reviewing, interpreting, and recommending adoption or modification of fire and building codes, including the Oregon Fire Code and related standards. The DSFM serves as a technical consultant for code inquiries, plan reviews for aboveground storage tanks and hazardous substance installations, and provides guidance to agencies, businesses, and the public. Additional responsibilities include maintaining liaison with state agencies and fire service organizations and conducting special technical studies and projects to promote uniformity and enhance fire safety across Oregon.
Codes DSFM Position Description:
(Focus in Wildland-Urban Interface Code & Defensible Space Code)
This position supports Oregon’s Fire and Life Safety Codes program by reviewing, interpreting, and recommending fire and building code updates to ensure statewide compliance and uniformity. This role provides technical expertise on code inquiries, plan reviews, and hazardous substance installations; promotes wildfire resiliency through application of the Wildland-Urban Interface Code; and collaborates with agencies and fire service organizations to enhance fire prevention standards. Additional responsibilities include developing the Oregon Defensible Space Code, managing exemption programs, and conducting special technical studies to protect communities and first responders from fire risks.

Position Details
These are full-time, permanent positions and are represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union.
Both positions are based at OSFM headquarters in Salem, OR. Depending on the selected candidate, we may consider other locations within Oregon or remote work options based on business needs.
Both positions are eligible for Police & Firefighter (P&F) Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. When the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.

Minimum Qualifications:
Five years of full-time fire service experience. This must include two years of full-time code enforcement and one year of fire cause investigation.
An Associate's degree in fire prevention, fire science or related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.
A Bachelor's degree in fire service administration or fire protection, fire science, or closely related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.
To comply with OAR 837-039-0011, you must have:
An ICC Fire Inspector II Certification or ability to obtain certification within six months from date of employment.
An ICC Fire Plans Examiner Certification

Special Qualifications:
Requires a valid drivers’ license with an acceptable driving record.
Must obtain the following certifications withing six (6) months from date of hire:
International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification
International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector II certification
International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner
NFPA Fire Inspector I Certification or equivalent
NFPA Fire Inspector II Certification or equivalent
NFPA Fire Instructor I Certification or equivalent
Oregon Competency Recognition certification – Oregon Fire Marshal level
Desired Attributes:
Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate work requirements, establish priorities, and create efficient schedules to achieve objectives
Proficient in interpreting and applying fire codes, defensible space codes, and fire-related laws to local jurisdictions and community settings.
Skilled in interpreting and applying building codes and related laws for compliance within local jurisdictions and community environments.
Strong public speaking and communication skills, with experience presenting in diverse and complex settings.
Ability to analyze fire and life safety issues, including evaluating new concepts and proposed legislative bills.
Proven capability to perform effectively in high-pressure, high-responsibility environments while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Experienced in conflict resolution, achieving successful outcomes in challenging situations while upholding a professional demeanor.
Certification as NFPA Fire Inspector II or equivalent.
Certified Building Official or equivalent.
