Job Description:

We are seeking a Wellness Policy Specialist (Operations & Policy Analyst 1) to join our Child Nutrition Office at the Oregon Department of Education. This is a (permanent part-time position) represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). This position is expected to work 20 hours per week and work days will be Monday - Friday.

This role is a hybrid of remote work and will need to report to office when business or operational needs are dependent on onsite activities. Remote work is embraced to the fullest extent possible without interfering with business. The role involves frequent travel throughout the state and may occasionally require evening, weekend, or extended hours for trainings, meetings, or other work-related events. Must have a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record or provide an acceptable alternate method of transportation.

The Child Nutrition Program office supports the State Board of Education’s mission by providing leadership and guidance for child nutrition programs across Oregon. The section helps schools provide nutritious meals to children and qualifying adults, delivering over 80 million meals annually, while promoting nutrition education to support lifelong learning, health, and productivity. The Core Oregon Healthy Schools Team leads planning, implementation, and evaluation efforts, and the OHS Advisory Committee provides guidance and partnership in developing school wellness strategies. This position works closely with the OHS Grant Manager to support wellness initiatives aligned with the Department of Education and CDC cooperative agreement.

What You Will Do!

The Wellness Policy Specialist supports the Grant Manager in carrying out grant activities and achieving program goals. You will provide administrative and operational support, develop and analyze policies, and coordinate school wellness initiatives. Working collaboratively with state and local partners, you will promote policies and practices that improve student nutrition, physical activity, and management of chronic health conditions, helping to create equitable and healthy learning environments for all Oregon students.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Assist the Grant Manager in implementing grant activities and meeting program objectives.

  • Provide operational and administrative support, including organizing meetings, maintaining records, and preparing reports.

  • Develop, review, and recommend policies and guidelines to promote student wellness.

  • Coordinate school wellness initiatives with state and local partners, including districts, community programs, and advisory committees.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret program data to support decision-making and improve processes.

  • Support the development and implementation of practices that enhance student nutrition, physical activity, and health services.

  • Identify operational challenges and recommend solutions to improve program effectiveness and efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications (Need to Have)


A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Behavioral or Social Sciences, Finance, Political Science or any degree demonstrating the capacity for the knowledge and skills;

OR

Any combination of experience or education equivalent to three years technical-level experience that typically supports the knowledge and skill requirements listed for the classification.

Minimum qualifications must be met to qualify for this position.
