What we are looking for:
The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain department gasoline, diesel, electric, propane, compressed natural gas, flex fuel and hybrid vehicles and heavy equipment in a safe, legal, and ready for use condition for agency employees. The employee in this position also completes vehicle and heavy equipment repair through cooperative agreements for other state agencies and associations.
- Maintains detailed, accurate and timely electronic service records on statewide system for tracking and budget use.
- Develops and maintains a parts inventory for anticipated servicing and repair of district vehicles.
- Fabricates components and constructs fire engines. Conducts research of vehicle and light/heavy equipment repair and replacement, makes recommendations to supervisor for best course of action.
- Maintain district shop in a clean, orderly and safe manner. Manages District/Association fleet vehicles.
- Assists agency personnel with offsite vehicle emergencies and towing. Operates vehicles and heavy equipment requiring a class A commercial driver's license.
- Provides support to the agency's fire suppression program in times of emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of automotive and/or heavy equipment repair experience; OR A combination of relevant experience and automotive vocational/technical training sufficient for successful performance in the job.
Required - Position requires valid Oregon Class A CDL with tank endorsement with no air brake restriction. If selected for interview you will be required to show proof of CDL endorsment at time of interview.
Required - You will be required to pass a controlled substance test as a condition of employment, and comply with all testing as required by rule.
Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.
Desired Skills:
- This position requires considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the automotive mechanic and small engine trade.
- Ability to weld and fabricate.
- Skill in using specialized diagnostic equipment to identify operating errors.
- Skill in inspecting malfunctioning equipment and determining a plan for repair, modification, or replacement.
- Skill in repairing automotive and equipment systems using the appropriate tools.
- Skill in interpreting and applying information from procedural and manufacturer handbooks to solve problems and make decisions.
- Skill in operating complex diagnostic test equipment and software, such as computer scan tools, wave form analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, fuel pressure testers, and pyrometers.
- Skill in installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
- Skill in completing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
