Job Description:

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) is excited to announce a new opportunity for an Accounting Tech (Accounting Technician) to join our team! We welcome you to join us today!

The Department currently has an opening for one full-time Accounting Tech (Accounting Technician) within the Budget & Finance Section of OEM in Salem, Oregon. This is a full-time, permanent position. This position has the opportunity to work remotely and support a hybrid (work from home/in office) work schedule. Remote work is evaluated periodically to ensure business needs are being met and can be adjusted at any time. Please note, applications may be used to fill future vacancies.

The Accounting Tech will assist the controller and grant accountants with requests for reimbursement payments, accounts payable and receivable, and correcting transactions processed.

General duties:

  • Review incoming payment requests to ensure that they are complete, accurate, and have proper authorizations.

  • Enter and initiate accounts payable, balance transfer, batch, closing year end, and correcting entries into the Statewide Financial Management Application.

  • Provide customer service and information on a variety of fiscal areas, including payment status, federal and state grants, budgets, monthly benefit accounts, contracts, etc.

  • Trace transactions through the accounting system using debits and credits to decide if they are correct or need correction.

  • Review SFMA errors and edits to isolate problems and decide how to resolve them.

  • Communicate accounting policies, practices, and procedures to internal departments, partners, tribes, state and federal officials, vendors, subrecipients, and the public.

  • Review and process travel reimbursement, SPOTs, and other routine monthly settlement requests and processes.

What do you need to qualify? Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience calculating, recording, and maintaining accounting information that must include coding transactions and checking them for propriety, balancing, and resolving discrepancies in computer edits; OR

One year of experience calculating, recording, and maintaining accounting information that must include coding transactions and checking them for propriety, balancing, and resolving discrepancies in computer edits AND at least 43 quarter (29 semester) credit hours from an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school that includes 9 quarter (6 semester) credit hours in accounting. Credit hours must include introductory level accounting courses 1 and 2; OR

Successful completion of the State of Oregon Accounting Career Mobility Program or equivalent accounting certificate program from an accredited college or university; OR

At least 94 quarter (62 semester) credit hours or an associate degree from an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school that includes 12 quarter (8 semester) credit hours in accounting. Credit hours must include introductory level accounting courses 1 and 2 and may include any additional accounting courses with “accounting” in the title.

Training or experience must include using a computer to enter, update, or retrieve information.

  • The salary listed is the non- Public Employee Retirement Systems (PERS) qualifying salary. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary will reflect the 6.95% increase.
