Your New Role

As a seasonal full-time Park Ranger 1, you will perform, conduct and oversee a variety of tasks in order to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems. You will accomplish these tasks by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs and properties.

We recruit for seasonal positions each year that generally work April through September; however, the duration may vary depending on the park's specific needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field; AND Six (6) months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

Desired Attributes:

  • Experience in the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.

  • Experience in performing and planning routine maintenance tasks and projects related to basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, custodial duties (including cleaning public restrooms and showers), and landscaping or trail upkeep.

  • Experience in interpreting and enforcing park rules, including informing visitors of facility policies, requesting compliance, submitting reports when necessary, and resolving complaints within a public overnight park setting.

  • Experience in independently leading and directing staff or volunteers by communicating work procedures, setting performance expectations, prioritizing tasks, and providing feedback to ensure goals are met effectively.

  • Experience in delivering excellent customer service while working collaboratively in a team; including the ability to stay composed and take appropriate action in emergency or high-stress situations.

  • Experience in using a computerized reservation system, collecting and reconciling fees and completing deposits.

  • Experience in engaging with park visitors by providing information about natural, cultural, or historic features. Includes independently leading or assisting with interpretive programs such as guided hikes, bike tours, or educational activities for children and school groups.
