Your New Role

As a permanent full-time Park Ranger 2 at South Beach, you will independently plan and carry out personally, or by conducting others, complex park maintenance, operation, facility and resource conservation and/or interpretation tasks to protect, maintain, operate, repair and improve state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems within the South Beach Management Unit (or Ocean Shore State Recreation Area).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field AND One (1) year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field; AND Two and a half (2.5) years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

  • Successfully complete wastewater operator level 1 certificate within 1st year on the job.

Desired Attributes:

  • Experience with specialized park resource and facility operations and maintenance, including plumbing and wastewater systems.

  • Experience in planning and organizing equipment, materials and staff to accomplish work, and preparing written reports, proposals and summaries.

  • Skill in the safe use of tools, materials and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.

  • Experience in diagnosing maintenance and operation problems, breakdowns and disruptions, and in initiating and carrying out solutions.

  • Experience in evaluating high-pressure or emotionally charged situations, maintaining composure, applying appropriate rules and guidelines, and taking decisive action by using “Verbal Judo” or similar tactical communications method.

  • Experience with patrolling grounds to ensure visitor safety and rule compliance; inspecting facilities for hazards, documenting incidents, and taking corrective action.

  • Experience in coordinating volunteer programs such as Park Host, Friends Groups, Adopt a Park, and giving direction to individuals or teams composed of volunteers in accomplishing tasks to achieve goals.

  • Experience with camper registration, processing payments for fees and sales, issuing receipts, reconciling daily revenue, and preparing bank deposits.
