What we are looking for:

As the Stewardship Forester, you will administer the Oregon Forest Practices Act laws and rules and provide forestry assistance programs to landowners within an assigned geographic area. Duties include:

  • Administer the Forest Practices Act and rules.
  • Assist private landowners, including Small Forestland Owners, by offering information and assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities.
  • Coordinate and communicate with a range of federal, regional, state, and local government agencies, as well as with a range of interests including landowners, environmental, and operator groups.
  • Work closely with other Forest Resources Division staff providing on-the-ground and administrative process coordination and leadership to small landowners and projects.
  • Assist landowners, operators, and clerical staff in preparing notifications and permits to use fire or operate power-driven machinery; evaluate notifications; inspect forest operations; review and comment on written plans and approve plans for alternate practices; conduct on-site inspections; enforce Forest Practice laws and rules; inspect and monitor reforestation requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities

AND

A bachelor's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program

or

Three additional years of related (pertinent) experience.

A master's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

A Doctorate degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

Desired Skills:

Skill communicating verbally and in writing with a variety of people to answer questions, give information, and give assistance on technical aspects of department programs or requirements.

Knowledge of a wide array of aspects of forestry that may relate to woodland practices, management planning, assistance to woodland owner, timber harvesting, regeneration, fire prevention.

Ability to organize, plan, and perform work safely and effectively with minimum supervision.

Ability to provide technical forestry knowledge to Forest Operators, including Small Forestland Owners.

Ability to review proposed operations for conflict with protected resources or with Forest Practice Statutes or Rule.

Ability to review plans for road construction on critical locations and stream crossings.

Assists Small Forestland Owners with affirmations, RCAs, SFISH, and other SFO Minimum Options.

Ability to determine activities for forest management plans and landowner assistance.
