This position is responsible for operating specialized heavy equipment to support statewide construction and maintenance activities for DOTD, performed in diverse outdoor environments and varying terrain with limited supervision; it requires the ability to adapt to changing field conditions, perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, and climbing, participate in ongoing technical and industry-recognized training, maintain equipment proficiency, and ensure strict adherence to safety standards, regulations, and departmental policies.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
Operates a diverse fleet of specialized heavy equipment—including excavators, dump trucks, skid steers, brush cutters, sewer jet/vacuum trucks, wreckers, and transport trailers—to safely and efficiently perform statewide transportation, maintenance, and construction activities.
Conducts thorough pre- and post-operation inspections, performs preventative maintenance (oil changes, sharpening/replacing parts, etc.), completes minor and occasional field repairs, and reports or addresses mechanical issues to keep equipment in safe, reliable working condition.
Handles the transport of equipment and materials using heavy-duty trucks and trailers, maintains required operational and maintenance documentation, and ensures all assigned equipment is clean, properly functioning, and job-ready at all times.
Supports overall departmental operations by adhering to strict safety standards and policies, completing required structured and manufacturer training programs, performing additional assigned duties, and assisting in the training and development of lower-level equipment operators.
Position Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment
Compensation: The starting hourly rate is $22.52/Hr. plus premium pay of $2.00 for every hour worked.
License Requirements: Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement at time of appointment
Work Location: The duty station of this position will be determined by the locale of the incumbent; however, the position may require frequent travel and overnight stays in neighboring parishes.
