About this Job

The overall function of this position is to assist the Assistant District Traffic Operations Engineer in fulfilling the duties of the District Traffic Section. This position is located in District 04, Unit 002, and reports directly to the Assistant District Traffic Operations Engineer. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and capable of interpreting unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will also participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend continuing education classes and conferences as necessary to support the successful performance of required duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR

Eighteen semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Conducts traffic studies and collects, processes, and analyzes traffic data to evaluate roadway safety, traffic flow, and capacity needs.
  • Prepares traffic engineering reports and correspondence and makes recommendations for improvements such as traffic signals, speed zones, signage, pavement striping, and roadway capacity changes.
  • Performs field observations, traffic counts, speed studies, and crash data reviews to assess traffic conditions and support engineering decisions in a high-traffic work environment.
  • Assists with reviewing project plans, permits, and traffic control devices to ensure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and departmental policies.
  • Supports traffic safety and program administration activities, including overseeing the district Outdoor Advertising Program, assisting with safety projects, processing permits, and performing additional duties as needed, including emergency or disaster response.
