About this Job

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of the Secretary exists to provide leadership and support services, administrative direction, and accountability for departmental programs; administrative direction and leadership to ensure the success of subordinate programs; and department-wide coordination, communication, personnel and basic resources needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

This Promotional opportunity is limited to current permanent status classified employees within the Office of the Secretary, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries only. This posting is located in Baton Rouge.

The Wildlife Enforcement Lieutenant serves as a first-line supervisor overseeing sworn enforcement personnel assigned to a district, providing leadership and operational guidance in the enforcement of all laws, rules, and regulations under the authority of the department and commission.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been as a Wildlife Enforcement Corporal or higher rank in state service:

Five years of experience in wildlife conservation law enforcement.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Applicants may be required to qualify as an ex-officio notary public.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

NOTE:
This job has special physical requirements in that the incumbent must lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more), walk long distances, work in harsh weather conditions, fire handguns, rifles, and shotguns accurately, and have the ability to operate vehicles, boats, and all-terrain vehicles while in the performance of duties.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Patrols public/private land and waters, including federal waters, using a variety of specialized equipment while enforcing laws, rules and regulations to protect and preserve the fish and wildlife resources and the citizens of the state.
  • Provides public safety services on the waterways of the state.
  • May be assigned to work and coordinate investigations in an undercover or covert capacity and may be required to infiltrate illegal activities involving fish and wildlife or other operations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
  • Schedules, tracks and coordinates the specialized training of agents statewide with technology changes and systematic updates or issues that arise.
  • Conduct statewide specialized training with enforcement personnel who are promoted to supervisory roles to assure they have the resources needed to manage programs within their regional districts /regions.
  • Division liaison for any technical issues that arise and works with enforcement personnel to resolve issues and or case management processes that arises within our Records Management System, electronic citation system and time management system.
  • Test, train and distribute all electronic devices assigned throughout the State. Test and mitigate any programmatic issues with systems or software changes relating to issued technology equipment.
  • Provides technical support to BWC users. Assist in training of BWC users.
