The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 61/Unit 720 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 2.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Operate heavy equipment for the purpose of performing maintenance related activities, including but not limited to Backhoes, Front end loaders, Dump trucks, Hot mix pavers, Motor graders, and Track hoes.
  • Perform duties as directed, such as shoveling asphalt, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and/or equipment, flagging traffic, paving operations, milling, placing large culverts, operating power and/or hand tools, etc.
  • Perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as installation of guardrail, fencing, pipe, catch basins, and drainage structures.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance in accordance with operator’s manual and manufacture recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely.
  • Shall be responsible to respond to call-outs after normal working hours, in all types of weather conditions, such as removing falling trees from the roadway, applying deicing materials, responding to traffic accidents, and draining water from the roadway.

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional
Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, Mobile Equipment Operator2, or Mobile Equipment Operator1/Heavy depending on the level of experience and licensure of the selected applicant(s).

Mobile Equipment Operator 1 positions are required to have a Class “D” Chauffeurs License before making permanent. Mobile Equipment Operator 2 and 1/Heavy positions are required to have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License upon appointment.
Compensation: Below is the starting hourly rate for each level and additional compensation information for the MEO 1 and MEO 2.
  • MEO 1: $16.06/hourly. Receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO 2: $17.18/hourly. Receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked, and a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO 1/Heavy: $21.05/hourly.
