This position is responsible for the geotechnical design and construction monitoring of complex geotechnical foundations and other transportation related structures for the statewide DOTD system. These designs require specialized geotechnical modeling, a complete understanding of FHWA and AASHTO design criteria, and advanced training utilizing specialized software packages.
The incumbent also serves as an expert in the areas of deep foundation design, construction monitoring, and analysis of deep foundation testing data. As part of this specialization, the incumbent serves as an expert in dynamic pile analysis and the specialized software (WEAP)tm, which often involves close coordination with District personnel as well as the Section's Instrumentation specialist.

Minimum Qualifications
-
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:
Two years of licensed engineering experience; or
Six years of professional engineering experience.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.
There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.
NOTES:
Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.

1. 2. Six years of professional engineering experience in the following areas: Design and construction of complex deep foundations for major structures, earth retaining systems, and levee/embankments; Geosynthetic stabilization and repair of embankments and slopes; Geotechnical sampling, CPT testing, and laboratory testing; Interpretation of specialized testing data from laboratory and in-situ testing; and performing and interpreting nondestructive testing for deep foundations (PDA).

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
-Performs the most complex designs requiring high level technical abilities on difficult and unique geotechnical projects. Incumbent is responsible for the design and/or Consultant review of unique and/or complex projects, including but not limited to the following: foundation, embankment/levee, and earth retaining system design for projects with unique or dangerous soil conditions, geotechnical design for deep water river crossings or projects with specialized ROW, phasing, or geometry requirements, design of earth retaining systems or embankments/levees using non-standard construction methods or materials, and implementation of new/experimental design methods arising from FHWA initiatives or research projects.
-Responsible for generating all special performance indicators for the above complex geotechnical systems when the Department implements alternative procurement methods.
-Responsible for ensuring design/builder compliance with all policies and procedures during the duration of the design/build project.
-Responsible for developing design reports, specifications, nonstandard items and specialized plan notes/details associated with the above complex geotechnical systems.
-Specializes in design and construction monitoring of deep foundations.
-Serves as an expert on the design of deep foundations, which includes driven displacement piles, drilled shafts and sheet piling. All of which requires close coordination with headquarters and district design construction and personnel.
-Serves as a member of the Deep Foundations Institute representing the Department in this specialized area of expertise.
-Remains engaged with District personnel in order to best assess the design needs of various deep foundation projects.
Position-Specific Details:
Compensation: There is a biweekly Special Entry Rate of $3316.00 for this position. The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant.
Appointment Type: This position will be filled as a promotion and is only open to current, permanent DOTD employees.
